badsworth
Can anyone offer any suggestions for locations from which to VIEW (only) the Red Deer rut on Exmoor this Sept/Oct? I am going to be staying for a few days and my wife has asked if we can find a location to view the RD during the rut (probably influenced by 'Autumnwatch'). I don't have any permissions there so will not be taking my rifle but I do want to encourage her interest. Can anyone help please? Specific locations if possible because I don't know the area. Guest keeperstweed
hi mate, just picked up on your post. hope im not to late, but i go to exmoor to watch red deer, for some years. the best places, are dunkery and horner woods. north side of dunkery beacon. get an os map and and follow the road north side of the beacon, and you can watch them from the car. good binos are essential and a good zoom, 300mm will do for photos. you can stalk in for some good close up photos, as the land is national trust. north hill near minehead is also good for rutting stags. im in exmoor myself tomorrow, for a week. happy hunting, good luck, mark. Thanks Mate - we went last weekend to the areas you said. Right areas - wrong time. Just a bit too early. The mixed sex herds were forming - but no sparring or roaring. I got a few good stalks in and some OK photos - but I will be going back in a couple of weeks. Thanks for replying. Badsworth
