Small rifle/small pistol primers ?

Hi

 

Are small rifle & small pistol primers interchangable ? to be clear can a s/rifle primer be used in a 357mag and can a s/pistol primer be used in a 223 and vice versa

 

I recently reloaded some 357's with small rifle primers which worked OK, then I reloaded some 223 with the same primers which failed to fire (no dent on primer from firing pin ?) this was for a Mini 14, which fired factory loads OK, maybe my 223 reloads were too short OAL ?

I wouldn't use pistol primers in a rifle as pistol primers are thinner than rifle primers so there's a chance the firing pin will pierce them.

Except in .22 Hornet, where small pistol primers are recommended. Probably .17 Hornet also.

I've seen loads of data of .17 hornet that uses the Remington 7 1/2 primers
