Not as pointless as you think, I once had a problem with my .22lr suddenly grouping all over the place, checked all the usual things, scope mounts, moderator, action screws etc. then remembered i had been playing with the lock ring after using a rear add on NV unit, and had not tightened the lock ring after. so it is something to check every now and then as they can work loose especially on larger caliber rifles.
