Update on Silversurfers Bangstick

Recommended Posts

Just an update on my Valkyrie Valhalla 6.5x47 Lapua to let my fellow members how things are going...Here is the gun i am talking about.

I have been loading two different bullets for this gun a 123gn Hornady SST for the range and 123gn Scenars for the range. Both loads have been using N140 and have been able to achieve 2658 (measured 10ft) & 2744fps (measured muzzle) through my 26" Barrel using a Chrony & Magnetospeed V3 chrono respectivly.

The gun itself has performed fairly faultless apart from an early problem with a QR sling stud which was'nt locking properly in the icy conditions; this appears to have been sorted. through the wearing in process.

The accuracy of the rifle is improving, not the rifles fault but probably soft bit behind the gun that is learning to shoot....(paper has never been my forte).. Groupings of 0.258"C-C with Lapua 123 Scenar, 5 shot being my best grouping so far from a bench position off Harris Bipod and a 0.375" C-C , 5 shot prone being my best with Hornady 123 SST hunting ammunition.

The scope IOR 5.8-40x56 is a beast and no doubt will out perform my shooting ability but coupled with Strelok I have no doubt that it will perform once I stretch out its legs....I have bought a selection of gongs recently from BHTargets so will have a play once the weather stabilises.

The first opportunity I had to go out after the Roe was the first week of January and i managed to triple head with distances of 149, 163 & 209 yards. A very pleasing result but a back breaking haul across clear fell resulted.

Thanks to Baldie for producing what in my eyes is a fine weapon and I have to admit I am still fascinated by the paintwork he produced...I shall keep u all updated.

Nice, what charge weight? Your velocities are quite low for a 26", i'm guessing youre in (or near!) a lower accuracy node?

Gary I used 35.3gn N140 from the.Vihtavouri reloading guide 13 which stipulates 33.2 to 36.4 for the 123 Scenars with N140. My 26" data also compares to Lapua's 27.5" barrel data within reloading guide 13. I also used this data to develop a load for the SST but tested this load to 36.5 and it kept opening up group wise with pressure signs from about 36gn.

Also I have just realised the bottom target photo is also a Scenar target too...so i'll adjust the description; below is a 3 shot N140 35.6gn SST target that i meant to post.

Interesting, not used n140.

38gn varget gives me 2820 from a 21" barrel, and 36.9gn n150 gives 2867 from my 26" barrel. I can easily go to 39 varget in the short one, but 37.5 n150 is pretty hot in the 26" one.

Glad to see your knocking the roe over with it, how are the sst's?

SST's are not too bad for me but there are others who hate them on deer, probably down to their experiences when using them; these have probably been discussed in other threads elsewhere on this site and others.

I use or have used them in .243w (95grn) and .308w (150 & 165grn) too...however they can cause a little collateral damage against bone but are generally accurate with minimal damage to the carcass if the shooter puts the bullet in the right spot. I do believe the 6.5 123 SST have the same bc as a 123gn Amax.too which helps when preparing data for the 6.5x47L.

I have also tried Varget briefly too due to a lack of it and also found promising results with 38.2gn using the SST, however I did'nt play around with the chrono on this load...as i was'nt pursuing for now.
