Went out this morning,Hopin to drop at least one goose.

We had a bit of a mix up as to who is where when.

Usually my huntin buddy(Dave) gives me a call to let me know

he is at the drive...Then load the dekes, gun, ammo, calls,

coffee...Gotta have Coffee.

He went out Friday without me and spotted a coyote,so as

an extra measure I grabbed the .17HMR too.

Warmed up some leftover coffee in the microwave...only to find out

the microwave died....

Not a good start.

Its 05:10 and no phone call....Check gear. All Good.

05:20 and still no call.Call him. Both the cell and the house phone.

Went to voice mail on both...Damn.

He slept in...again

05:30 the phone rings.Wants to know where I am.

Waiting...He showed up at 0:510.....but forgot his cell.

He comes back...

Give instructions on this modern thing called a

Door Bell....

Flex forefinger, extend arm and push.

Stop at all night gas station.....Get Coffee...Super Large.

On to Farm...let farmer know we were going out.

Farmer has 2 new helpers and the cows are crabby.

They dont like the new help.Kicking the milkers off.

Not a good day.

Its just breakin daylight...missed first flock, birds really early.

Got dekes set up and we are under cover. Miss thermos.

Want more coffee...Boot top deep alfalfa out in front and standing corn

for cover at out backs and sides....about four rounds/rows picked off.

Its unusually warm, lots of ground fog and heavy haze

No wind.....First flock comes in right over us and in range too.

Slap the trigger on the Bennelli and the first bird is folding.

My day is looking alot better...Dave missed his shots....

My bird dropped clean and thumps down not 20 feet from us.

Lined up on number 2 and rushed it,and missed.

Ok,one down.Good enough.

Nothin comes over for awhile...tried callin as there is a pond

about a 1/4 mile away...We can hear them honk as they hit

the water....Takes abit but we work a flock up.

I flubbed up on my shot as a corn stalk leaf blocked my barrel and

I thought I was lined up.Dave drops his bird. Its a wing shot and its

in the corn at our backs.

Not good.

Lookin for a runner in corn isnt fun.

We look for 20 mins...got the bird.

Things lookin better...Check out birds. His is banded and was marked

Ontario,Canada....Unusual band.The 2, I got at home read U.S.F.W.S.

Northern Bird...Migration is on,A real Canadian Goose.

Didnt see any Yotes....took a walk hopin for a couple squirrels too.

Only seen Chipmunks....Found a Coon tree.No Coon.

Not a bad day after all.

Thanks...

That is one of the biggest ones I have dropped yet.

Wish I had a few extra bucks I woulda had that

one mounted,Told Dave that he should think about

havin his mounted since the band was from the

Canadian version of the Fish and Wildlife Dept.

Wich reminds me I gotta call him and see how he made

out when he reported it.

Plannin on makin some Stroganoff outa the breast.

Its gonna be Angels first with fowl....LOL

They aint too bad...once ya get past the swampy smell.

Usually use in place of Beef in stews...throw in a few

extra beef bullion cubes and nobody is the wiser.

Long as the lid is left on while its cookin.

I would much rather be huntin then workin....but I got

to pay for the rounds somehow....and even if I was to see

nothin to shoot it would still be 100x better then the best day

at work....

well done 308, the worst days hunting always beats day working.

How do u cook the canadas, we get hundreds of thousands of the buggers over here but never seen a good recipe yet, especially the old ones.

Rogern,

What I usually did with mine....I used to use the whole bird sectioned,

but its a bit of xtra work...fill the slow cooker w/ goose pieces.

use beef broth instead of water and let cook while at work.

Then let cool and debone, remove silverskin, fat and other

parts...Use fresh beef broth and potatoes, goose, carrots, onions

celery, and spices and let cook a second day while at work...

Thicken w/ cornstarch if needed...depending on amount of broth used

potatoes will cook down and mash easily and help thicken also.

I like mine plenty thick...and to speed things abit will boil up extra

potatoes seperate, and mash them into mix...some guys add cream of mushroom

soup(condensed) and mix that in as stew base along with the beef broth...but dont add

more water to it...

Now I just breast them out.

Alternate Recipe for those not so ambitious.

Clean and dress bird, lay on wooden board of choice and

cover w/foil.Bake at 350 for 3 days.

Discard bird,Chew on board.... :D

Goose Stroganoff isnt bad either....

Use the breast for this...Cube or strip out breast like for Beef Stroganoff.

Use slow cooker and beef broth or buillion cubes for base....Cook till tender/done

on lower heat setting...This part gets a bit tricky, but let cool down abit(15 mins-1/2hr ) and add

sour cream then turn heat back up...reason for lettin it cool some is so the sour cream

wont curdle...Dont let it boil or simmer once the Sour Cream is added.....Just warm it up

Serve over choice of pasta...

Bernie,

For a home shoot stuff that was a very cool vid....I like the one where the bird almost got ya...I knew it when I heard the shot that that one was landin close.....

I like droppin them close like that....no lookin needed, except maybe to dodge the fallin body. :D

Our limit on birds is 2 per day....So I was happy with the one I got.I like shootin em more than eatin em....The reason for the 2 bird limit(so they tell us) is so the Southern States can have some to shoot too....But they just feed them to the hogs...

No offense to the callin skills...but,work a feeding call in also...it will help make the hangers commit.

Its a big rush, when they actually land in the dekes....Sometimes they will come in silent,so I sit silent too...its neat to watch.

Banded Bird Update:

I just got off the phone with the guy(Dave) that dropped the banded bird....

I think I mentioned earlier the bird was banded in Ontario,Canada.

The Refuge that did the banding is under the name Jack Miener Refuge and has

differant bands then the USFWS (US Fish and Wildlife Services).

Well, Dave called the USFWS and they gave him the number to the Jack Miener Refuge

so he called them...They played a couple rounds of phone tag leaving messages on each

others voice mails. But were finally able to connect on Wed of last week.Today he got a

Certificate in the mail on the bird...That bird was banded in 1994.It was 13 yrs old it also was

one of 308 (I love that number) birds banded by either Jack Miener himself or a volunteer worker

back in '94.

He did give me his permission for me to post on the site

so heres a pic of Dave and his Bird.

Cheers 308, the wooden board recipe seems like the geese i have tried, they must have been old honkers.

Brilliant bit of filming, i was right there in the stubbles with you.
