Thanks all. I was surprised to see activity on this thread as it's six months old. I ended up getting a CZ457 in 22LR which I love, and I'm using it with 38gr Eley. However I've not had much chance to use it recently as I ended up with a month in hospital for heart surgery! I hope to use it again in a few weeks. Jim

Yeah a lot of people have said the old 40gr were far better than the newer 38gr. I'm going to buy some more Eley 38gr this morning, and also some RWS, and put a couple of boxes through, 100 of one then 100 of the other, at 100 yards, and see what I end up with. Weather forecast for Thursday morning is dry and calm so I'll see what I end up with. Winnies in mine were poor too, but I have 40 of those left so I will have another go with those at the same time. I just wish Match were quieter! Jim

Yeah I was thinking the same. I'll take a trip back to Dundee and rifle through their ammo stash and look for stuff at the lower end, and see what happens.

Thats very useful, thank you, I didn't know that. On the box I have it's 1075. Eley advertise it at 1040-1085 so my box is at the higher end.

1040....the website for Eley Match shows 1040-1085 but everything seem to run hotter for me, I wonder if it's the slightly longer barrel in the CZ 457 LRP. Seems to be a characteristic of this gun, the 38gr subs are listed at 1000-1040 but this youtube shows another guy getting much higher speeds, same as I do.

Interesting....22LR is new to me and I've read so much online to suggest that subs are more accurace than supersonic due to not traversing the sound barrier. During my testing today I've not seen any evidence of that. I tried HV American Eagle and they were accuract but very loud, and the Eley Match seem like they might be a good balance.

The only snag is they are running supersonic out of my cz457 lrp. In fact almost all the ammo I’ve tried is supersonic. Eley Match was 1156.

Hi folks A trip to Dundee yesterday saw me walk away with 8 different sets of ammo for my CZ 457 LRP .22LR. I inadvertently bought one box that was supersonic, which didn't half walk up the neighbours, but the rest were subs. A few photos attached; thoughts welcome? All are at 68 yards. To me, the best is the Eley Match, where the ruler is, but I had a couple of groups earlier on that were poor. EC - Eley Club ES - Eley Sport EM - Eley Match CCI - CCI segmented Norma AA - American Eagle HV (No idea why I put AA not AE). Very accurate but very loud. W/C - Winchester. Now the obvious thing - they are not hollow point. However in my view accuracy is more important than damage, simply because all my rabbits are headshots, so a bullet is a bullet; I previously used .22 JSB 15.89 pellets in my FAC air rifle. A HP will do more damage, but if the accuracy isn't there then it's a lottery anyway. I have tried a bunch of HP - Eley HP, RWS, CCI - and none could match the groupings that I've achieved today. Red circles are 12.5mm/0.5" and yellow 25mm/1". Thanks Jim

Hi all I've been trying out some different .22LR in my CZ 457 LRP. I'm curious about subsonic ammo. CCI 40gr subsonic, three shots: 1138 fps, 1116 fp, 1136fps Eley 40gr subsonic, three shots: 1118 fps, 1110 fps, 1106 fps Only the RWS are providing to be subsonic: 1075, 1047, 1047, 1063, 1076. Is this normal? I know barrel length, altitude, temperature etc all influence the velocity, but these seem consistently inconsistent! Thoughts? Jim

Still strugling to see how to fit this. WOuld I be expected to drill the stock? Seems od, given that the front has tqo studs as standard; nothing at rear.

Hi folks I've just acquired a CZ 457 LRP .22LR which I love. But I can't work out how to attach a sling! The pointy end of the gun has studs, but the butt doesn't, and I can't see how to attach one? Thanks Jim

I’m was tending away from the HMR due to the noise; I have a very loud .223 and a very quiet .22 FAC PCP and I’m hoping the .22LR (not bought yet) will be more like the PCP for noise.

Hi folks I'm looking to get set up for nighttime bunnies on my .22LR. I'll be using subsonic ammo, which is quite loopy, and with distance hard to judge at night, I'm interested in a NV scope with inbuilt LRF and ballistics calculator. Something like a DS35 or ATN X-Sight. I'll use the same gun in daytime. The design of the DS35 worries me, in that I'll catch the eyeballs on the top on a branch or something, and the ATN-X-Sight is £1149, so serious decisions to be made (and stuff like Thermion is out of my budget). SO...for anyone here who pops bunnies at night with a LRF NV scope....do they really work as well as the marketing would suggest, with a "secondary reticle" based on ammo BC and distance? Or are they gimmicky? And if they are good, whch make/model would people recommend. Many thanks Jim

Hi all Long time Chairgun user, even though they stopped developing it years ago. it did the job fine for my FAC .22 airgun, and with my Hawke Panorama scope I was used to doing holdovers at a fixed 10x mag. Since getting my .223 I've started doing clicks, and I like the approach. I've been using Strelok Pro. I'm about to get a .22LR and will also be going for clicks. Finally, I'm going to get a new scope for the airgun, with resettable turrets, and will move across from holdover to clicks. What app would you guys recommend? Chairgun is too basic and clunky Strelok Pro is great but I'm wary of putting all my eggs in the same basket due to the app being withdrawn/author sanctioned etc. Sako Ballistics is fine for my .223 but isn't really gerared up to working with multiple guns Hornady app is good but the suggested adjustment is in MRAD or MOA, not clicks, and I just know that one day I'm going miscalculate (I know 1=0.93 mrad is 9 clicks, but still ). Also, the Hornady app rounnds bullet weights to whole numbers; fine for the bigger toys but it takes my 15.89gr airgun pellets and changes them to 16. Ideally I want to be able to store presets of gun/ammo/scope, dial in a distance and get a clicks displayed. Interested to see what you guys and girls have found? Hi all I got my FAC back today with the .22LR added. So......what to choose? Background: I currently have an FAC .22 air rifle (Daystate Airwolf, 8 years old) and a Tikka T3x in .223. I'm looking for something "in the middle" that can grab bunnies out to 100 yds but not spook the neighbours, so I'm looking at subsonic. Yes, the Daystate can do it, but 100yds is towards the far reach and TBH I'm fed up with the faff of getting 12Ltr dive bottles filled, 3 hour round trip. My RFD is 5 minutes away. So, currently eyeing up Tikka T1x or CZ457, but compeltely open to suggestions. Don't really care what it looks like, and price is also not the main factor, it's accuracy. I know .22LR is wind-susceptible, and drop is similar (or worse) to the airgun, so my eyes are open. But so are my ears, and I'm be interested to know what rifles you'd choose for bunnies @ 100. NB This will also be night, so looking at a DS35 or equivalent scope, but gun first. Finally, nothing in the trees, all ground level with backstop. Many thanks Jim

Hi all I recently bought a "kit" from my local gun shop (Glasgow); rifle, scope, mounts, bipod etc. The mounts are Burris XTR Signature. The mounts are "Medium", and the gap between the scope bell and the barrel is around 9mm. I can buy the "Low" mounts, and I believe they will fit, and will reduce the gap to around 3mm. The mounts are £99. So my question: is this worthwhile? For 1/4 inch. Rifle is Tikka T3x and scope is Steiner Ranger 4 6-24 x 56. Thanks Jim

I'm looking at replacing my FAC airgun for something else, and I've looked at 17HMR and 22LR. I have my 223 for out in the open fields but I currently use the airgun nearer to home, and I think the HMR would be too noisy (I don't know how noisy it is compared with the 223 though) so I'm tending towards the 22LR. The brass is all from Gamehead and Remington. 135 so far.

Hi everyone Firstly, many thanks for all the valuable input to my query, it's much appreciated. I ended up taking a trip to Glasgow as they had a Tikka T3x Varmint in stock. But when I got there, they showed me a Tikka T3x (non Varmint) package deal, with Steiner 6-24x50 scope, Burris mounts, moderator, bipod, shooting sticks and bag; the package deal saved around £500 versus the individual items, and given that I was starting from scratch I went for it. I bought a box of every ammo type they had and have had some fun hours in the field getting to know it. It's only a 1:12 twist so I know I'm limited to lighter ammo. The gun seems to prefer Federal 53gr (vmax bullets) and Gamehead 50gr; I can get the Gamehead in my local shop (4 miles away) so that's what I'm settling on. Coming from an FAC airgun, it's quite an eye-opener. I zeroed at 100yds and then measured at 150yds and was amazed to need just one click. 200yds was 5 clicks (StrelokPro reckons 4). I'm unlikely to be shooting beyond 200, but I will measure at 300 just for reference, whenever I can get my telescope down there! I now realise why it's VERY important to go for headshots on bunnies; I always did this with the airgun. I've only tried one bunny so far, a headshot, and there was basically nothing left of the head! So bunnies for meat, it's head only, else you just have fur left. I have a box full of used brass shells now, and have no idea what to do with them Fun times ahead. Thanks everyone Jim

Thanks Richiew, yes that's a big help, thank you. I wasn't really sure how comparable the ftlb was so that's a good guide. I've been using StrelokPro this evening with my 223, and some of the click readings are quite different to the reality. I don't have a chrono so at the moment I'm unsure if the FPS I've entered (from the ammo box) is very different to what I'm actually getting. I use StrelokPro with my air gun too, so it sounds like it's stil recommended for the 22LR if I go down that route. Good advice re: avoiding ricochet, thank you. re: pump. It's a nightmare. I get around 20 shots before I have to top up the gun, and the Hills pump nearly killed me. Hence the two dive cylinders Cheers Jim

Hi all Hopefully this post/query makes some sense. I currently have a .22 Daystate Airwolf MCT FAC (approx 40 ft lb) and a .223 Remington. Both are primarily for bunnies. The Airwolf is now 8 years old and probably needs a service (£400) and my two 300 bar 12ltr dive cylinders are overdue for hydrostatic testing (£50 each). So I'm looking at swapping out the FAC Airgun for "somethin else." .22LR seems to be a logical choice, perhaps with subsonic, and the ammo is affordable; not like my tins of 500 pellets of course but much cheaper than feeding the .223. BUT everything I read about .22LR says "ricochet". So a bit about my requirements. The .223 is for long-range bunnies; I have permission across 250 acres (neighbouring farm). But we do get bunnies in the garden, which is around 3 acres and is surrounded by trees and a field. There are also some neighbouring houses 80-90 metres away, to the side (not in the direction I am shooting). But because of that, both ricochet and noise are concerns. And my nearest dive centre for fills is 75 minutes' drive each way and that's a PITA. What are your views on what I should do? Keep the FAC Airgun or replace it with a newer FAC airgun? Swap it out for a .22LR? Swap it out for something else? Over to you knowledegable people! Many thanks! Jim
