Look at these beauties, 285 Grain Hornady ELD-M on the left and a Warner Flatline 285 Grain on the right. The behind the ELDs are 115 grains of RS80 (RL33) and I have 5 Flatline loaded in 2.0 increments from 117 grains to 125 grains of RS 80 as per David Tubbs advice, there is still room in the case for more powder. The ELDs are to run the barrel in as they are only £1.00 per bullet not including case powder and primer, the Flatlines are £2.50 each and currently unobtainium in the UK.

John, what is the Cartridge's Overall Length with the Flatliners?   Is it 120mm?

  3. Les, I am pleased that you have confirmed what the Error Message means.

Could it be that you had some form of Power Cut or Surge since you last looked at the Scales?

Equally Terryh's suggestion is worth considering?

Please keep us informed of the source of you problem, thank you.

I have the same Scale with the full Auto-Trickler setup, (*not sure which PSU I am using), but I always unplug the PSU after I have finished using it, so no power is going to the Scales.

When I come to use it again, I always turn on the Scales and Zero them about an hour before I start my reloading process just to ensure all the electronics have "warmed up" and "settle down".

    Regards MarkR

    * Just checked PSU supplied with Scales = 1amp.  PSU supplied by Adam = 2amp.  I am using the 2amp one.

Has anyone who uses the A&D Fx-120i scale had the message L6 appear on the screen?

I normally keep the power to the scale but leave it turned off.   I was going to use it this morning and even without the power button turned on it shows L6 on the screen.

I did check the manual but cannot find any error message letting me know what it means.

    Any help appreciated.

    Les

Les it is Error Message Lb not L6.  Lb is for Low battery error =
Voltage of the power supply drops.
Confirm whether the correct AC adapter is used.

Please see Page 68 of Fx-i Manual

I'm going to come over as very OCD, so no flaming please, it's just what I do that works for me......

I wanted to batch my brass in batches of ten based on their WCC. Cleaning and processing in tens is completely crazy and unworkable so had to come up with a solution that would allow me to wet clean in ss media in batches of 50 and allow them to get sorted afterwards.

I use an electric scribe/electric pencil to mark a number on the left of the headstamp for the series and a letter on the right size to group in 5/10.

It's a chore and a bit extreme but that's my regime and helps me keep track of brass.

gruntus, I like your solution to the problem, but I will try the sharpie route first.

Just don’t clean your brass if you’re colour coding segmented brass - the Sharpie will come off in the tumbler (unsure about US cleaning though).

Catch-22, now you tell me...... just discovered that Wet SS Tumbling will remove sharpie colour markings even in the extraction grove.   At least I now know that i will have to tumble the segment cases in their respect batches and then re-mark them.  I think I need one of these...

  7. Many thanks to Charlts, lapua, Popsbengo, TC, Tralle, gruntus and terryh for you replies and useful suggestions.

In answer to terryh’s question “Out of interest why are you marking the brass, this is not being funny, just interested.”

I have 300 off Lapua brass cases (same batch number) which I have already segmented (at least twice previously) into various batches prior to reloading them.

Having fired them all at least three times, I now have 270 off cases ready for reloading but unfortunately as they have not been previously marked in any way, I am just about to segment them all again, but this time I wish to make sure I mark them so that they can be easily identified in the future.

At this year’s Roundhouse PRL weekends, I did see several competitors with marked brass, so thought I would ask what was available before making something myself.

  8. I wish to mark my 6.5CM brass cases with different colour Fine Point Sharpie's.  I have seen a pen holder on a USA based site (which looked like it was 3D Printed) that produces coloured rings.  Does anyone know of a UK based supplier/maker of such a device that would hold at least two Sharpie's to speed up the process of marking the brass cases?  Thank you.

Cheers and with the 419 gear the new bluetooth works well does it ? i have emailed adam but no reply yet, and certainly don't want be paying out again on same bits.

Barrelsniffer, I only purchased  the v3 electronics, which is just a replacement board in the back of the A&D Scales.  Unscrewed the old v2 electronics, inserted the new v3 board, re connected up the Auto Trickler and Auto Throw, and switched on - everything worked as before, but the only difference is that you can use Bluetooth to control both the Trickler and Throw motors independently of each other, but more importantly, you can set your target weight with a few clicks on the related App on your Mobile Phone or Tablet.  At present I have no need to change the old v2 "Lee Powder Meter" Auto Throw mechanism like John MH is doing because of an RS80 powder problem.

  10. Barrelsniffer, in answer to your question, as I already had Adam's full v2 setup on a set of A&D Scales, with Area 419 Upgrades (like your photo above), all I purchased was the v3 electronics which cost USD $60 plus postage, plus small Customs Charge here in the UK, making a total of £92.57.

    Cheers for input Dave

question: how do you time up the ASE muzzle brake / adapter? Skim the back face or crush washer?

    Terry

Terry, I maybe able to answer this, the ASE Muzzle Brake is made up of two parts, the part that secures to the barrel on to which the Moderator attaches and locks, and a front ported section which is threaded into the static part attached to the barrel. You can rotate the front ported part to "time" it, which is then secured by a very small grub screw in the static part.

  12. Terry,

I have a SL7i-BL .30 on my 6.5CM Ruger Precision Rifle using a AU761 Muzzle Brake Mount ( 5/8-24 UNEF thread ) and I am very pleased with it.

The only regret I have is not buying the .300/.338 version.

If you are at The Roundhouse on the 16th/17th March you welcome to view it.

I also own two SL5's in .25 and .30 Stalking Rifle barrels,  regards MarkR

@MarkR  Yes, 44gr RS62 seems universally popular as a sweet spot load behind the 139s (equally, 42.5 to 43gr in LR brass does the same thing) in SR brass.  I arrived at it using OCW and haven't tried pushing the 139 harder with a mildly compressed load when the 44gr seems to shoot so accurately.  I was shooting with a few chaps last who went straight to 44gr in SR brass (perhaps after reading my earlier rambles!) in similar length barrels, and they seem to have had some success with that load.

VarmLR, with a more knowledgeable friend we also conducted a OCW test when first starting to use RS62 and data from Quickload.  I prepared 300 off new Lapua SR Cases (all the same batch number) ensuring that they were all the same COL.  We then weighed all 300 off (without primers) and found that there was quite a wide (but small) range difference in their weight, selecting to use cases from the middle weight group for the OCW loading.  Using Hornady ELD Match 140gr we then loaded up 3 off of 44.1gr, 44.4gr, 44.7gr, 45.0gr, 45.3gr, 45.62gr, with 4 off 44.5gr as sighter's.  Comparing the resultant groups, and with the knowledge I was intending to use it the rifle for long range target shooting, we decided to go with 44.9gr.  On another day, I then carried out MV testing and found that the 44.9gr loads gave an average of 852mps with SD 3.6 ES 8.  I also tried 44.0gr loads that gave average of 832mps with SD 4.6 ES 10.

I then moved to the 139gr Lapua and found similar MV, and decided to drop down to 44.0gr for my go for load.

Interestingly, I have now loaded up all 300 off Lapua cases and found that the unfired heaver ones when seating the bullet, felt like slightly compressed loads even when using 44.0gr of RS62.

My next job is weigh the cases again, and just concentrate my reloading on the lighter ones.
