  1. SGC's original LA9, had some initial problems as it used a plunger-type ejector that chucked the short 9mm case out too soon unless you really worked the action fast. That model has been discontinued, but in 2020 they launched the new 9mm LAR, which is much improved in terms of reliability. There's a video on YouTube (gunmart tv) that shows it in action (21 dec 2020) and another on the 15 Jan 21 showing more detail. Really nice piece of kit and works well.

    Enjoy

  2. 308 ARs tend to be a bit on the heavy and potentially big side and being a hybrid system you can experience issues with primary extraction (unsticking the case from the chamber) an issue exacerbated by ammunition quality, or the lack of it. Yes Valkyrie does some good work, but I'd also say speak to Southern Gun Co too, as they have probably made more AR10-types than any other and have the most experience. Not sure if they still exist, but you could also see if anyone brings in LMT who made the Civilian Version of L129A1TM  MOD “Sharpshooter” rifle. Shot that and it works pretty well, try firingsolutions.co.uk.

  3. I bought a T1x MTR last year and really like it, as an ex CZ452 owner I think they are about on par. but I prefer the T1's magazine and safety catch systems. The LOP is rather short and I fitted the extension kit and a rubber recoil pad as the original is smooth plastic and gives no shoulder adhesion. Also added the forend adaptor that widens and flattens the grip and the expanded pistol grip too. Plus a Kalix Teknik adjustable comb kit. All improve shootability, but on the downside they add a chunk of money and in truth Tikka should have put more effort into the stock design at factory, as it's pretty basic for what is otherwise a good rifle. Might have been better off looking for a second hand T1/T3 GRS Berserk or Bifrost.

  4. I have two Bifrosts, one on my Remy 700 and the other on my Tikka T1x and really like them, the fully adjustable butt is good, but the offset pistol grip is superb. However, both had a strange quirk when you first torque them down, as you're winding the bolts in, suddenly there's a sharp crack. Both times, I stopped and took it off and looked for something broken, but nothing and no problems shooting after. Go figure.

  5. Pile of chod, everyone seems to feel they need to offer some form of military look-a-like these days and as you said the R1 is a very bad investment. Anschutz did the same thing with their 'dynamic shooting' semi- based on the awful ISSC copy of the FN SCAR, terrible...

I have a .22LR and it’s handy but I could do with something with a bit more range / flatter shooting for shooting at night, mainly with NV.

Common sense says a HMR is the obvious choice but I’m a bit fickle and don’t love the idea of one so looking for thoughts on WMR, Hornet (.22 or .17) or even a .17 rem potentially.

Not firing millions of rounds, do reload (very basically). Noise isnt a massive issue other than disturbing other rabbits (I use a .22-250 occasionally for the job when I get really pissed off) but less is better.

Am I just being stubborn with avoiding the HMR or is one of those options a real contender, I’ve never used any of them but quite like the idea of the hornet.

HMR is a super cartridge, mine a Ruger M77/17 All-Weather (stainless heavy barrel) can head shoot out to 200 yards on a fine day, but is not so clever in the wind, that's just the way it is. If I was moving up then it would be the 17 Hornet, as that is a little peach; fast, flat-shooting and good accuracy potential.

If I could find one, a little 1.2-5x36 Zeiss Duralyt might work well.

Not huge, handy mag range and with the illuminated ret and the mag turned down very quick on target.

    Scrummy

I've got one, I've used it for boar shooting for many years, the only problem is that the illumination doesn't work and Zeiss UK did not seem interested in repairing it, apart from that it's 100% and a great little scope for up close and personal, that can also reach out to well over 100 yards.

I don't know about 17 Hornet, but my two 22 Hornets feed well, as does my 204, 223, my two 6.5 Grendels , the 300 AAC and three 7.62sx39s. I have had a couple of bad magazines through the years but otherwise all was fine. If handloading, make sure you load them to fit the magazine with some clearance at the nose.

Be forewarned that CZ has dropped the 527 so find a rifle and pick up a few extra magazines. I recently took delivery of seven for the Grendel/ 7.62x39 when I spied them, in stock. I think CZ will continue making mags for a while but it won't last. ~Andrew

Blimey, someone else who owns a Grendel, don't you just love them? Mine's on a CZ527 action with a Pacnor stainless tube at 22". I do have occasional feed issues and tend to load four and not five rounds, but for a light and effective, mid-range small/medium deer and fox rifle its sweet. I run mine on Nosler 100-grain Partitions and Viht N530 powder.

I have been developing an itch for an AR15 style semi auto for informal target and occasional bunny bashing. My criteria are for all metal construction, a threaded barrel with all features being functional rather than just decorative… I tried a Hammerli R1 and the fake mag release and forward bolt assist really annoyed me. Function with subsonic would be really useful
From my investigations so far the Tippman Arms seems to be ground zero but what about other brands like CMMG, Kriss, Southern Gun Company and Lantac with regards to quality, reliability, accuracy etc. Anyone’s experience would be appreciated! I probably won’t be purchasing this year but it is as well to be informed in advance.
    many thanks

The R1 is not that good and the Kriss is quirky and a bugger to cock until you know how to do it, even then it's no AR in terms of shootability. Have not shot an SGC or a CMMG in a long time, so I reckon it's the Tippman. However, and put your hate of plastic on hold for a moment, the S&W 15/22 is quite some rifle, I've had one for 8-years and it's all tricked up: Cerkote FDE finish, Magpul furniture, etc, etc and it's a shooter. Very reliable and a good little rabbit basher, with Winchester 42-grain MAX subs, even out to 100 yards for body shots, plus great fun as a plinker and it scratches an itch as I come from the time before the SLR ban.
