  2. Hello all,

    My friend and colleague’s Bergara HMR in 6.5 seems to have some gouges in the rear of the bolts locking lugs. 

    I have not had a chance to inspect the action for similar.

    He keeps them greased so am unsure what caused this - perhaps grit?

    I advised him not to fire the rifle until he was advised otherwise by a suitably qualified armourer etc - however would like your opinion on this.

    The second photo shows the gouges which to my eyes are significant. 

    Thoughts?

    Some types can be regenerated with a long low bake in the oven .  I have 2Kg of the type that changes colour when it's absorbed as much as it can - turns dark blue.  Bake it out and it's light orange.

    Many packaging supply companies will supply large tubs of the stuff for peanuts.  I use loose weave bags (little sacks from eBay) to hang in the cabinet, let the air circulate, easy to fill and empty for regeneration.

    A heater is ok but a dehumidifier is better, it removes the water rather than just raising the vapour pressure like a heater.

    Is it rust or brass deposits from the cases. Does it look a bit spotty looking in through the breech or are you using a borecam to view it more clearly..?

    Every bore clean I use a 45 cal bisley bronze brush to keep the chambers clean.

    Chrome moly - have a bore scope arriving so at present it appears to be rust - good idea on the brush!

  5. Hello all,

    have two Tac a1s, I keep them clean and looked after using boretech products.

    however I recently discovered some light rust in both rifles chambers, the gun room and cabinet clearly has a humidity problem so will be shoving as much silica gel type products in there ASAP.

    however, I didn’t expect this given I was using bore tech eliminator, which itself is recommended as a bore cleaner as well as an anti rust measure.

    have read that EEZOX is a gold standard in anti rust, so will give that a try before putting the rifles away, and clean out the bore and chamber before shooting.

    thoughts welcome!

  7. Hi guys,

    Managed to to test the 4451 / CCI450 / 147 ELDM / Lapua 6.5CM SRP brass combo at bisley.

    I used a magnetospeed v3 on my 24" Tikka Tac A1 using an MK Machining mount, so the chrono wasn't attached to my barrel.

    The wind 10 to 20 MPH from all angles, air and ammo temp was 21C, measured with a kestrel and laser thermometer respectively.

    All loads grouped well despite the wind, so I focused on SD/ED and will shoot for groups another day in more favourable conditions.

    The below 40.6 grain load had excellent figures, but is quite slow - however Tikka barrels can be known to be slow, however given the relatively warm ammo temperature of 21C, on a more common, cooler day I may see a lower MV, although the IMR Enduron range are meant to be relatively temperature insensitive - ( https://precisionrifleblog.com/2016/06/19/powder-temp-stability-hodgdon-extreme-vs-imr-enduron/#:~:text=That%20is%20very%2C%20very%20low,to%20large%20swings%20in%20temperature. - approx 68 FPS from -3 to 60C)

    Unfortunately the other shots of the below series were not recorded, however they grouped very nicely at 600 and seem to have good SD/ES.

    I did however notice some marks on the Lapua brass after their first firing, I am unsure whether this is brass wipe or smear from the virgin brass on the bolt face during fireforming, from bolt unlock and cartridge extraction, or from excessive pressure. 

    In the picture below the 41.2 load cartridges have been arranged to place the ejector marks at the 6 o'clock position.

    What are your thoughts?

  9. Gents,

    just sorting through some 3 x fired Hornady 6.5 CM and noticed some striations on the shoulder of the cartridge.

    i suspect this is from a poorly lubed case and the expander ball compressing it.

    has anyone seen this before and have an idea whether these would be safe to fire?

    Ive measured my cartridge base to lands of my rifle being 1.815 inches

    I’m going to try a 0.050 jump as some have had good luck doing so with the ELDM, resulting in my COAL being 2.378.

    If I were to follow the data COL of 2.550, the 80 ELDM would be jammed 0.060 into the lands.

    I appreciate there’s a line between reducing case capacity / increasing cartridge pressure as more projectile is seated into the case, however I feel the jam above would be the most significant culprit with regards to pressure.

    Not sure how to proceed?

    Looking to develop some loads with the following components, for a pair of Tikka Tac A1s in 6.5CM and .223

    6.5CM - Virgin Lapua SR Brass, CC450 Primers, IMR 4551, Hornady 147 ELD-M

    .223 - Virgin Lapua SR Brass, CC450 Primers, IMR 4166, Hornady 80 ELD-M

    Cant find a great deal of load data, although the 4451 has been suggested as a 4350 replacement, and the 4166 to be similar to Varget.

    using a rebel 17 wet tumbler.

    Use some soap and rinse aid sold by spud.

    not sure if these are water stains, as these appeared after coming out of the tumbler.

    there seems to be a water stained shape area where the brass is less reflective.

    not sure what this is or if it matters!

    Thanks for the reply, as the hole doesn’t enter the chamber I’d assumed it would be safe to fire.

     I’m ignorant of the criticality of the hole and to what extent it may undermine safety.

    Some have suggested that it isn’t safe to fire while others suggest it’s ok.

    Unsure how to proceed, may have to get it sent off to proofhouse.

    Thoughts appreciated!
