Wind reading lecture…

Recommended Posts

Was at this class myself. Alot of it was stuff I'd already heard of or read about but Emil broke things down and explained them really well.

Made a few things click in my head a little better.

Must have been a humbling experience to have been present for one of Emils lectures

Glad Frank captured it for all

Yeah he seemed like a real nice chap.

There were alot of Shooting World big names there to be honest. Alot of them had a lot of time to sit down and speak to people about all kinds of stuff.

That’s good, Frank posted a reflection of the event and some characters involved on his latest podcast

🤣 Yes so i have heard. Havent listened myself yet...

A few of the GB, NZ and Iceland team had a 15-20 minute impromptu gun number lesson from Frank over some of Armageddon Gears own brand lager (which was quite nice btw.. Wind Cheater i think it was called).. I don't know him.. but my first impression of him certainly wasn't as good as lot of the others names i met.

Derek Webster of DI Precision having just won Factory division literally got back to the car park and started giving a bit of a Kestrel class to some of us and the Irish.. really nice, humble,  knowledgeable guy.

I won't divert from the topic much more

Please share what you learned. Don’t worry about going off topic.

Frank has a unique personality looking from the outside having never met him. I have to admit his recent podcast made me chuckle.

Na I was only going to go into who all the really nice genuine people were 😅 was a fantastic experience and honestly my brain was so overwhelmed with information and amazement at the facilities they have out there.

All of the US shooters were very humble in victory openly admiting the rest of the world were closer to them than they thought we would be and that's a testament to us all given how restricted we are for facilities/freedoms to shoot etc.

"The Shooters Mindest" on Facebook and YouTube live streamed pretty much the entire event if you were interested.

It just shows how limited we are in the U.K. for shooting opportunities.

Thank you for putting us onto the shooters mindset. Ukv was once a hotbed of activity for steel plate shooting but social media took off and it all got lost which is a shame. I don’t really use Facebook but will certainly look it up.

It's all about shiny shirts, self promotion and sponsorship now.

I watched through that video,  mostly stuff I've learned but some useful new information for me.  Probably the best take-away was to think of the target in "wind speed width".

Interestingly, we were shooting at Eskdalemuir last week at 1660 yds and seeing  an occasional side drift off the 1.5 moa wide plate but doing some numbers on my ballistic calculator ±1mph is just under ±1moa.  I feel better about just missing in a light wind gust now 😀

Yeah so Wind Speed Width of target was one thing I walk away thinking I definitely need to consider the size of the target more.

There was a amusing moment on Day 4 of the comp when the wind picked up.. we had a big gust, dust/sand was blowing everywhere and a bit of Tumble Weed rolled up the range and a few of us looked at each other and was like ah... that's a 23mph wind..

Because one of the things Emil said was he learnt the exact speed that tumble weed tumbles.. and was talking about learning things in your environment that will give you a wind indication.

starts to tumble...  surely it tumbles ever faster as the wind pick up !  I'm looking forward to finding indicators of wind at T4 Eskdalemuir - so far nothing other than my or my mate's last shot comes to mind (beyond the first 100yds that drops away quickly).
