Frederick
Considering CSR , possibly historical . The .303 versus the 30.06 ? Prefer the handling of these rifles over the Lee Enfield , prefer the look , the only limitation (possibly) being the mag size . Purely on reliability and accuracy is there a winner ? I reload , would this point more to one calibre than the other ? I am googling and reading , would appreciate the opinions of owners and those with hands on experience 😀
Roy W
For CSR they are both good enough accuracy wise. It will be personal choice. The limiting factor will be your ability. For the standalone Historic CSR matches they will compete equally with SMLE's, in the CSR league and Imperial you will be classed as 'Iron Sights' and be lumped in with AR15's, AK47's and a mishmash of other iron sighted rifles, because the Historic class is purely Historic Enfields for SMLE's and No 4/5's. The 5 round capacity would almost certainly mean you'd rarely complete a course of fire. Â

Vortex
I have the M1917 and honestly prefer the 30-06 cartridge to .303.  Bit more recoil out of it but it’s an accurate cartridge. Shoot mine out to 800 and it’s still an accurate rifle for over 100 years old. Find yourself a nice one and you won’t regret it. Regards, Vortex

We are hoping to book Bisley later where I can have a shoot. Thanks Vortex 🙂
Andrew
P-14. There are some poor 1917's out there but P-14's tend to be very good.~Andrew

The Gun Pimp
Chose the '17 - there's a massive choice of bullet for the 30-06 but very few 303.

I'm happiest shooting prone out to ...say 300 - 900 yards . Not sure if snap shooting or kneeling , sitting is for me 🤔 Are there comps for iron sights and just prone position ? I have downloaded the CSR book , seems it's almost all position shooting ?
Vortex
Yes I shoot in comps, Military mainly. Other comps I just drop in and out of as and when.
KABOOM
I have had both and sold the P-14 after a year of not shooting it. Both are fine rifles and other than non windage adjustable rear sight I love the US1917. For those who compete get good stripper clips in stainless steel. then be quick of hand. I did this in Service Rifle matches and kept up with AR shooters.
Fifty_seven
I own a Winchester made P14 and they are extremely accurate for 100 year old rifle and it is a joy to shoot
