22 LR Average Group from your gun

Recommended Posts

I’m still chasing the accuracy on my RPRR but haven’t had time to shoot since June.

I had a brief bit of time today to play with the barrel tuner  but not to a proper extent (no real scientific method, just 1/4 turns to find one it liked)

Of the three targets (100y) the middle one was my “I think this is tuned” setting from playing at 50y, I cranked it one way a bit shot one, then back to tuned then more the other way and it seemed to go back out of tune. (The picture has rotated when I uploaded it, so in reality it is  vertical spread not windage which is what the tuner seeks to improve )

I then shot the glo sticker at 50y to be sure.

All of these were shot with my length sized SK Long Range Match ammo, I noticed much less consistency when shooting unsorted ammo so I’m going to continue to do that.

It’s probably about as accurate as I am going to get it now I think, I have to accept that there are still fliers, they show up on the chrono and you can hear the difference.

At the same time my wind reading ability is also improving as is my technique so these are the next things for me to improve for sure.

Tikka T1X 16” barrel in KRG Bravo stock

Bipod & rear bag on wobbly bench

RWS R50 at 50 yards (for six groups) and 25 yards (for two groups, just to see)

(switched to the R50 on the day - from Eley Match which were not quite as good)

I’m sure to test the R50 at 100 yards at some point

My 20 inch Tikka loves R-50. When the wind gods allow, it is no problem to put 10 shots on a 1" square at 100 yards. ~Andrew

  • 1 month later...

Thought I’d give the sub calibre conversion a try in my 45-70. Basically a 22rf tube with an offset chamber which aligns the CF firing pin with the rim of the 22rf.

SK flat nose match what I had with me seemed to go well in the 22” insert barrel, better than I expected actually

unfortunately I’d not put in any alternate foresight elements so the shoot-n-see target pretty much filled the foresight aperture which made things more fussy that you’d want. Fun all the same 😀

Playing again.

Top left I aimed at the bottom if the white disc..

Top right at the middle..

Both 10 shot groups with 42gr winnie subs..

It is pretty drafty upon a exposed batch.

2nd group down on the right is a 10 shot group with eley match..

The elevation spread was worse than I'd hoped..

Off a Harris pod and a sand sock for a change that's why I expected less verticle..

Shot from 50yds

Had another play.

Got a box of tenex to try..

Both top groups 5 shots with tenex..

2 x 5 shot groups underneath eley match..

Same conditions as last time..

Just watched and listened for the wind too drop off.

I think it's down to driver error and set up.

I'm wondering whether to torque up the actions screw a tad more to see if there's any improvement..

One of you on here told me what the torque settings are for a CZ452 but I've forgotten what I did them up too..

I know that since torqing them the 42gr winnie subs shoot much worse than they did before I changed it from a really tight feel tension..

As tight as I would go...!!

Today's worst group was 0.510.

Best was 0.329.

Measured centre too centre.

After the first group top left with good elevations I thought that's better here we go then right target didn't repeat.

I'm curious to see if a bit more torque improves it 🤔

neil .

on both of my old 452 s

torque setting is 22 inch pounds for both action screws

It must have been you who said what torque setting was..

I did have a gut feeling it was you..

You gottabe the right one too ask then...!!

Do you think I'll see a difference in group size if I torque up a little more..

I'm not unhappy with the eley match that's for sure.. the rifle hasn't ever shot aswell..

The old eley subs were 0.5 inch grouping ammo and better at times..

Eley match have produced sub 1/4 which is bloody good out of my CZ452 varmint

The old 40 grn eley subs were the best imo that’s all I ever used along with eley HV that were the same bullet just a bit more punch .

what I did Neil was start around 15 Inch pounds for BOTH action screws  … 10 shot group then

16 inch pounds ….10 shot group

you know where is going , and I ended up at 22 inch pounds

I think the max torque is 28 inch pounds for both screws .

I think it does make a difference be it a small one .

Give it a go

I have got one of them rubber barrel tuners.

I tried it on the winnie subs but found the improvement in the groups wernt repeatable but that may have been down to that they didn't like my barrel much..

As my barrel likes the eley match the tuner might actually improve it a bit..

Just a little bit would make it really good

You  might also want to try one of the little hornady case gauges

your be surprised how much difference there can be in the case rim , which is chngeing the head space by as much as 4 thou on some cases .

there only about £20

it’s all about the little things .

A simple gauge is a fired 223 case, pop the rf bullet into the case nose first  and measure the loa.

Tuners work and normally create a more round group, removes fliers in my experience.

you can easy go down a rabbit hole with rf’s 😉

Thanks Terry..

I'm out at the mo on a permission ready to try..

150yds,200yds,250 and 300..

Started pissing down soon as I got here..

I've got the ranges pegged out  but I may need to move..

Got some shelter from a hedge as wind is left too to right.. hedge is on my left..

I'll see how 150yds goes..

I will move into a field and have a tail wind for the longer shots.

Going too use the reticle for 25 moa.. see how the holdover works at 150yds first
