Dustyman
Any advice on what would be good to push 6.5x47 out to a thousand yards ? I’m currently using 123 scenars out to 600 and wondered if they would have the legs or whether I should be looking heavier . Realise need twist f for full answer and will get later . But sat at work musing at mo and thought would start the thread . Ta for lewkin , rgds Ian
Catch-22
Mine is a 1-8” twist, 26” tube. I run the 123g Scenars at around 2920fps. According to both Lapua 6DOF and TRASOL apps i need about 9.8mils of elevation and, the 123g Scenar is travelling around 1246fps at 1000m, so still supersonic. No i deer
Mine is a 1 in 8 and I use 139gr scenars.they will do you nicely,41grs of RS62 works great,10 thousanths jump
Andy Welch
I have a 16" barrel with 1 in 8 twist. I use 142gr sierra match kings and have no trouble hitting steel at 1000 yards. I also have a 26" 1 in 8 and take that out to 1200 yards plus again with the 142gr SMK (6.5x47) Andy

Andy Welch
Pretty sure (as I don't have the log handy) that it is 38gr of N550 and CCI BR4 primers. MV is about 2535fps and it drops into the transonic at about 1100 yards (1218fps) according to Strelok Andy
Andy Welch
it is the same load I use for the 26" barrel as well
NigelM
I'm running a 7.5 twist 24" barrel and Sierra 150 pointed match kings. RL16 at 2585 fps and very accurate out to 1250 yds which is as far as I have pushed it so far. With Richard Utting a couple of weeks ago and hit an 8" square steel at that range twice on the trot followed by a rabbit that popped up 10 ft to the right of the target. James8870
1:8 twist 26" begarra barrel, 142 Sierra 142gn Match King. I still have varget, so Im happy with 36.5gns of that at 2950fps with an SD of 5.7.. 1000 yards is not a problem. Run on a 20moa rail. Go up 32moa from a zero of 100yds. Tack Driver Good luck with that one! Very impressive numbers but I bet the barrel doesn't last long. I was running 130's at 2910 fps on the last barrel which was 8.5 twist at 26" with RL15. In just under 1000 rounds the throat had eroded by 140 thou and accuracy went from exceptional to average (0.5 MOA). It was great whilst it lasted but with the new barrel I have gone for 7.5 twist and the Sierra 150 pointer MK and a powder with a lower burn temperature and backed off the pressure. It performs better in terms of wind drift than the last combination and I'm hoping to get a bit more life out of the barrel.

terryh
Gosh, I’m like ‘gosh’ at some of these numbers from a 6.5x47, this is 6.5-284 performance! https://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/65x284/ no saying it’s not being done, but ‘gosh’! 😯 Makes my old 37.5g of R15 under 123g Scanars that ran just over 2800fps look very mild. baldie
Some of those figures are bordering on disaster. I would check your chronographs.....
No i deer
I just checked my 6.5x47 bal cal figures and my 27 inch pac-nor 8 twist with 20 moa rail come up from 100yds zero is 29 minutes at 59 degrees with 41grs of RS62 behind a 139gr scenar. Velocity approximately 2820fps. Also I looked on accurate shooter in cartridges and it shows 37.5grs of Varget pushing a 140gr hybrid 2790fps. Something is adrift there with those figures. 2950fps would be around 26 minutes of elevation at 1000yds
Re-Pete
James8870, that weight of bullet in that calibre at that speed would have me twitching every time I pulled the trigger.................something ain't right, and I hope it's the chrony............ I just ran your load through QL using the standard COL etc, and it says 2754fps and Pmax 62920. 6.5x47 CIP spec is 63091 psi, so it's already hotter than I would ever consider. To get 2950fps, you're looking at 39.5 grains of Varget and a Pmax of 79899psi.............somewhere near proof pressure? I know QL has it's limitations, but even so............ richard griffith
.with 37.5 grains of Varget that drives a 95 grain V Max at about 2900 in my Tikka semi custom.26 inch barrel with 8.5 twist.I too reckon on the chrono being out.Richard. Tack Driver ShotMarker would disagree with those figures James8870 - if you're the same person I think you are. It's showing you with an average velocity of 1397fps at 1000yds which would suggest a muzzle velocity of around 2600fps for the 142s. Of course we don't know how accurate it is but it ties in reasonably nicely with what my app suggests for my rifle.

James8870
I rechecked stuff...my mistake. Its running 2703fps, overall oal of .2.850" and 59228psi.. Data according to Quickload. It shoots well, little recoil and not exactly high pressure spikes.. Sorry for my mistake...
Re-Pete
6.5x47 is a great round. Have you tried 123 or 136 grain Scenars with RS60? Pete
James8870
Ive tried both the scenar 123 and 139's. I prefer the 139's if using lapua heads. I haven't tried RS60, but will need to start using another powder very soon giving that varget is now unobtainable.. I can get Vit powder easily enough, am considering trying N150, or anything else that folk can recommend thats consistent for low SD figures. I am using Sierra 142 matchkings at present, as am hapy with them.

Re-Pete
+ 1 for RS62........just started using this with 136 scenar "L"'s, and it looks very promising, and kinder on barrels. Pete
