Ronin
Maybe Dave will help with this one - he should know if AI do use them Have to say I’ve never seen a nitrided Ai barrel - usually stainless and coated exterior.
Catch-22
8 hours ago, ChrisF said: Any used or know anything of the Nitride barrels AI makes for its rifles ? Cheers Chris Nitriding is big in the US. A lot of the big manufactures like S&W, Glock, Spikes, LWRC etc offer it as a finishing step on parts that are high wear items (e.g. bolt carriers, slides etc). Some companies do Nitride barrels but only once finished as you cannot Machine a nitrided item as they're too hard and will break the tool. With this in mind you cannot guarantee the accuracy of the barrel. Custom builders will offer chamber and test fire the barrel to ensure it's a 'shooter' first. If good accuracy is found, the barrels gets thoroughly cleaned & de-greased then sent to Nitriding. Im unsure whether AI nitrides their barrels or not. I know a lot of pistol barrels are nitrided, as are some AR15 types, and some custom rifle builders do it but yet to hear AI doing it. If they do offer it, I suspect it's AI in the US, not over here in the UK. There are only a couple of specialist Nitriding outfits in the US who offer the proper service for firearms. To my knowledge there are none in the UK (I've explored this myself and spoken to most treatment facilities). But AI UK may be doing it in house? Or maybe abroad? After getting nowhere with Nitriding my Defiance Machine tube gun action (most either don't have section 1 or don't have the facilities or correct treatment methods) I did find a UK firm with section 1 & 5 who offer DLC treatment. bradders
Here’s a very good article on nitrided barrels https://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2017/12/30/the-pros-and-cons-of-nitride-barrel-finishes/ I also have no idea about nitride AI barrels, but I do have a couple or three experiences with nitrided barrels to relate to, oddly enough all being from the same company. These are all AR based: The first one was having problems with its gas piston system. I noticed upon checking that the headspace was tight, so when removing the barrel extension I noticed it wasn’t as tight as it should be, upon torquing it down it also now clocked over-centre and thus it ended up with a misalignment for the piston assy. Further to this there was nothing I could do about the headspace as the surface was as hard as a diamond, and even a carbide reamer wouldn’t touch it End result? Nothing I could do, had to go back to the Mfr Second one was an issue with hard extraction, with the chamber being tight I had the same issue as above with the reamer, the squealing sound of reamer against hardened steel is not to be heard too often!!! Lastly, a customer shot out his 9mm and I rebarrelled it for him, to scrap the barrel I tried cutting it with a bandsaw, then a parting off tool, and finally settled on a 4” grinder and cutting wheel Tough as old boots, but if there’s any issues they are difficult to deal with

baldie
I've never heard of nitrided barrels being available here, nor seen one . I would guess its an American thing.

ChrisF
Its in the price list on sporting services website , its seems a extra cost for this ?
baldie
That doesn't mean its a factory offering. SS also supply aftermarket barrels, could be one of those the option is available on ?

baldie
After speaking to the factory, I can confirm that factory barrels in nitrided finish, are now available in 300WM and 338LM for the AXMC rifle only. Hope that clears that up.
Hobbit
Baldie - do you do barrel to action thread protectors for the AXMC? something like this, to protect spare barrels when they are in the safe https://www.milehighshooting.com/hrd-gear-bhs-m30-accuracy-international-axmc-barrel-chamber-thread-protector-cap-m30/ Thanks

Hope that clears that up. Very interesting. Do you know who's actually doing their Nitriding? And do you know if it's vapour dispersion (Gas) Nitriding or Salt Bath Nitriding (SbN)? If SbN, do they use the QPQ finish? I couldn't find any suitable applicators in the UK - most seem to only Nitride at temperatures too high for pre-hardened steel. Maybe there's a difference required in treatment of barrels and actions. I'm not sure?!?

bradders
No they don't, but now they want AI to divulge trade secrets.... Dave, why didn't you ask them all these other questions when you were on the phone to them.......on your day off?? 😉
baldie
I did Mark 🤣 despite telling customers i was taking Christmas off, I've still had to open the shop, because people simply won't take a day off during the rest of the year ,to collect guns, nor will they stop sending parcels to the shop. Regarding the barrels. That is all the information that is going in the public domain.
Catch-22
I hardly thought it was 'classified' information, especially as most of these applicators openly list the brands they work with on their product sheets. Anyway, thanks for the reply. If you don't ask, you don't get. Cheers
