mole-e30
600 yard Benchrest Completion Sunday 13 November 2016 Firstly apologies for the late publication, domestic dues have taken priority this week. Round 2 of the season – not a ripple on the water! Will it last and does it really mean there is no wind – let’s see. Today we have 29 eager folks; 4 Factory Sporters, 9 Heavy Guns and 16 Light Guns. Welcome back to Dale Almond, “long time no see” and welcome to Steve Gash and Stuart Henshaw for their first time at Diggle Benchrest. Morning detail is 4 relays comprising Factory Sporter, Heavy Gun and one Light Gun – will the Light Gun get an advantage or not? Well it certainly looks like there is little wind, although from the butts it can be seen that the range flags do occasionally lift, getting caught during one of these “lifts” might wreck a small group. Well a mixed bunch for the Heavy Guns, Les Holgate finally seems to be getting the hang of this benchrest lark and shoots ever improving groups to finish with a sub 2” and a 3.170” agg. Dale Almond has not lost his touch during his absence and starts with sub 2”, can he keep it up – sadly they get a bit bigger but he still finished with a respectable 3.236” agg. Laurie Holland has abandoned his 6.5 x 284 for something a bit bigger and shoots a tidy agg. at 3.274”. Mary Marsden, as usual is pushing hard with a 1.9” first group, but like others, groups 2,3 and 4 grow a bit but Mary is still left with a good agg. just under 3.5” – how will Jim fair – not as good he’s bitten with a 7” third group which spoils his agg. otherwise he’d be on the podium. How are the Factory Sporters doing? Paul Parkinson starts with a tidy 3.5” but groups 2 and 4 stretch the agg. a bit but he still finishes with a creditable 5” agg. Newcomer John Gash starts big and then gets the hang of it in groups 2, 3 and 4 – well done. Some say this Benchrest lark is easy we say come and try it then you can utter your pearls of wisdom. Toni Young has two good groups but gets edged off the target with one shot in one group and then has a “flier” in group 4 leaving her with less than her usually impressive results. Stuart Henshaw has scope trouble and struggles to get on target, so retires before he can manage his first groups, hard luck Stuart we’ve all had that problem in the past. Quick lunch as we need to finish early for our hosts (PSSA) AGM. Wind seems to be picking up, there are now ripples (better than waves) on the reservoir. Question for Adrian Evans, the only Light Gun in the morning, will he have snuck an advantage with the mornings conditions? The afternoon is 4 relays of Light Gun, as said last time with no measuring in the butts it’s a bit difficult to understand how small the groups are and now we’re using small Marker discs the groups tend to look bigger than they actually are, but we’ll get used to it. Early shooters show a few smiles but nobody is jumping for joy. Generally most are keeping their groups pretty consistent, with no big variations. A number strike it into the one’s, Bruce Lenton, Tony Lenton, Jeanette Whitney and Mal Roberts and there are plenty in the two’s and early three’s. However pride of place goes to Gary Stewart who is in the very very low one’s with a NEW UKBRA RECORD of 1.121” beating his previous record of 1.212”. His agg. at 2.424” is perilously close to Bruce Lenton’s record of 2.332” just 92 thou off ! WELL DONE GARY!! In the end Gary uses his record to great advantage and takes first place, closely followed by yours truly who just pips Mal Roberts by 13 thou. All finished by 15:00 just in time for the PSSA AGM, grateful thanks to Vince and his very capable assistant Jeanette for the RO’ing and also thanks to the butts crews. Another small apology and thanks at the same time. I have to admit to miss-measuring one of Dale Almond’s groups which we all thought had broken the UKBRA Heavy Gun Record, and was reported as such at the prize giving. However Dale has given us the right measurement and it was not a record. The results below are CORRECT and those present at prize giving can ignore what was said there. So Mary your Heavy Gun record, 1.563”, set last month still stands! Sorry about that I’ll get new glasses and recognition to Dale for his call. New certificates will be issued next shoot, in fact for all classes as I have now repaired the colour printer!
