mole-e30
600 yard Benchrest Competition Sunday 2 October 2016 First one of the new season, what would the weather be like? Well we were treated to light winds and sunshine, yes sunshine at Diggle. On reflection it was probably one of the better days of the whole year. Today we have 29 eager folks waiting to put lead in the backstop, 3 genuine Factory Sporters (remember the rules were updated at the recent AGM so the odd “Factory Sporter” have been “relegated” to Light or Heavy Gun), 9 Heavy Guns and 17 Light Guns. Welcome back to my long lost second son – Mr Gary Stewart - we’ve missed you, also welcome to Steve Roberts for his first time at Diggle. Just to keep it right and proper we weigh all the guns, especially those who want to claim Light gun – fortunately no surprises everyone is OK just! We also record details of action, stock, barrel and scope, please remember if you change something you might go over weight. A quick look shows 75% of the light gun shooter are using 6mm’s - BR’s, XC’s Dashers etc., 600 yards is ideally suited to 6mm’s – let’s see. Morning detail is 4 relays with 15 light guns. With no measurements being taken in in the butts we having to rely in the bright green indicators discs for some idea of how we’re doing, a single disc is great news, two close together not too bad, just try to keep the space between the discs as small as possible. Early indications suggest that the light wind is paying dividends and some small groups are likely. Measurement at lunchtime confirms the assumption and we see that most shooters are struggling to make groups bigger than 6”, there are the odd exceptions mainly due to penalties or catching a wind shift, but in the main folks are getting 2”, 3” and 4” groups. Sub 2” groups are delivered by Jeanette (1.496”), Mal (1.982”), Vince (1.601”) and Phil (1.862”). The lead so far is Mal Roberts agg’ing under 3” – well done, but there are a couple of Light Guns for the afternoon. Bruce and I have to suffer the indignity of BOTH being beaten by Emily who has moved up to Light Gun, although Bruce did plant 4 shots in 0.5” we’ll not say what happened to the fifth! All fed and watered now predominantly Heavy Guns and Factory Sporters, but 2 Light guns also. The wind seems to be easing back even more, not much of a ripple on the reservoir as the afternoon shooters get ready. As the first lot of targets comeback for marking, it is clear that the small group scenario is continuing especially for the majority of Heavy Gun shooters. However, we do have a few folks who seem to have come on the wrong day, this is Benchrest guys not F class. A few of our F class colleagues attempt to shoot some of their details in “F Class” style – nah it doesn’t work and they are well bitten even in this “light” wind. Despite the light wind there is only two sub 2“ groups in the afternoon well done to Mary Marsden (1.564”) *** A New UKBRA RECORD*** and Steve Roberts (1.865”). In fact looking at Mary’s performance maybe Jim would benefit from a few lessons. The heavy gun tussle is won by the new boy Steve Roberts – well done some great shooting. The afternoon’s Light gun shooters have mixed fortunes with Dave Jackson keeping his agg. below 4”, but nobody is going to catch Mal Roberts! The Factory Sporters also have mixed results with Dan Valmont coming out on top and also claiming the FS small group at 2.438”. All done by 3:15 not bad at all. Thanks as ever to Vince and the butt’s crews a very efficient day.
