1000 yard Benchrest Competition Sunday 19th June

Hooray – no rain, little wind and no intense sunshine, a great day for shooting, can’t believe I’m at Diggle!

First shots down the range just before 10am can things get any better?

Twenty-seven shooters today, one more than last time, a few familiar faces missing and a couple of “overseas visitors - welcome again to Benjamin and Jochen. Good to see Simon, Jane and Graham back, just realised Graham must have just come for the ride as he didn’t shoot – what’s up Graham?

Heavy guns, Factory Sporters and Adrian Evans in the morning, Light guns this afternoon.

Three heavy guns up first and one factory sporter, no problems sighting in so were ready for record cards at just after 10.00 – great we’ll be finished mid-afternoon.

Early scores are reasonable then bingo John Campbell hits the jackpot and Bruce Lenton’s 10 shoot heavy gun record is toast. John shoots 165mm (back to inches after Thursday’s vote all being well) that’s 6.496” (previous record 6.960”). Well done to John and for all you “F Class” shooters that with the “new” Berger 195gn 7mm bullets – super shooting. John also takes the 4 by 10 shoot agg. record from Mr Dixon established earlier this year – John’s agg. was 9.242” (Willy’s agg. record from April was 10.299”). Unfortunately Willy and Big Boomer were not shooting today.

Factory Sporters are having a good crack too, Alan Seagrave hits a 122mm (4.803”) with a barrel that’s been shot out for the last two years – never trust a shooter who claims his barrel’s shot out!

Nick Parkin is on form again 8.307” for an agg., not quite a record but Sean’s record is likely to disappear if Nicks keeps this up – not bad for an off the shelf-factory rifle!!! We’re quite happy if Nick wants to stay in Factory Sporter aren’t we?

Bit frantic in the butts, also a bit confusing with the Heavy Guns shooting 4 groups but “cooling” in between, but the butt’s crew manage admirably, encouraged by the RO’s “words of wisdom”. Please can we have a mobility scouter for the butt’s officer, your’s truly was knackered by the end of the morning detail did more miles than an England footballer.

After suitable repast Light guns to the fray, virtually 4 full details.

Soon becomes apparent that the wind is flicking down range near the targets and causing the “dreaded vertical”, good groups are going to pot with one or two shots being lifted or dropped as the wind turns. Discussions suggest this is a 2016 phenomena, nobody seems to recall this effect being so pronounced in other years.

As for groups, some frustration about, but one or two are mastering the wind Mal Roberts and Sean Broxham take early leads will anyone be able to catch them? Sean has a great group of 5.709” (nearly as good as the factory sporter – sorry Sean). Bruce Lenton tries to catch them as does Jonathan Walker but to no avail. In the end it is left to our overseas visitor Benjamin Sueess using Bruce’s Winchester (ex Vince) to take third place. Another point of shooting etiquette – if you borrow someone’s rifle is it really fair to beat them?

Another good day, we all had fun and good crack (no Officer that’s talk not class ‘A’ drugs).

Thanks to all those who make it happen at both ends of the range and “off-range” too.
