Gelston 1000yard BenchRest shoot – 12th June 2016

A bit misty on the road to Castle Douglas, would it be OK at Gelston? Yes was the answer clear and not too sunny. More importantly the wind was not excessive.

What would today have in store for us?

A few familiar faces missing, but a few more than last month, we were very pleased to welcome Les Prior come to give Gelston a go - welcome Les.

The start was a little delayed as we spent time putting up the new flag pole at 900 yards and the new flags and we’ve even now got small burgees on the top of each target frame easily visible through the scopes even at 50 power. With all the wind indicators this should make it even easier!!!

First detail 4 Light Guns, including Tom Thomson back in Light Gun after putting his 7WSM on a wee diet. The wind seems pretty constant left to right about 5-6moa of wind. However, as the targets are marked it seems that elevation is the issue rather than windage. Initial score are not too bad with Glen Cartwright taking the early lead.

Next up 2 Heavy Guns, Les Prior and Emily Lenton, accompanied by two more light guns. The banter between the Heavy Guns is plentiful and all are questioning will age and experience beat youthful confidence? As the score come in it is clear that round one goes to Emily, round two to Emily, round three, my goodness Emily shoots a screamer 3.818” what has this girl had for breakfast. Not only is Emily giving Les a lesson but she’s also wupping Dad, at this rate she’ll be walking home, good job we’re in Grandpa’s car. However, Les get a conciliation prize - round 4, and Bruce takes a very healthy lead in Light Gun.

Lunchtime and time to change over.

Afternoon detail one, 4 shooters sighting in, but only 2 competing both Factory Sporters. The wind is not as steady as before and keeps dropping of, keeping on the target is the challenge for this detail.

Afternoon detail two, two Factory Sporters and two Light Guns. Again David Leslie shows how to do it, with his 6.5 x 284, you stay in Factory Sporter David, there’s no rush to join Light Gun! Lewis uses the booboo first today and leaves Darrell with a warm barrel and mirage, but despite the excuses Darrel just pips Lewis after Lewis suffers in relay 4. Hard luck Lewis so close to wupping the “old man”.

So which wind flag is important? All of them! The new flag at 900 yards probably shows the wind there has more influence here than we expected – need to watch it more carefully next time.

As ever thanks to the butts crews, and also Glen with his spotting scope, hope you’re not planning any holidays through the summer!

Thanks for the write up Tony. That flag at 900 certainly showed something new, along with a wind direction I'd never seen before. It just goes to show how a knoll in front of the target can induce problems when the conditions are right. As for factory class......the barrel is living on borrowed time I'm afraid and I'll be lucky if it sees the season out , so light gun it may have to be but based on a short action once I've decided on a calibre and what chamber to go with .

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit That bald headed Geordie. It's a nice wee range, and the banter is always good .
