Gelston 1000yard BenchRest shoot – 20 March 2016

Firstly thanks to all who came for the working party 28th February, everything was ready to go this Sunday due to your efforts.

Folks were keen for the first shoot, many arriving before 09:00 but there were soon 20 folks present with 18 planning to shoot (14 competing and 4 having fun). A few new members and a few visitors too – so welcome to Bonnie Scotland and proof that it doesn’t always rain here.

A relatively bright day, still a bit chilly, but as said above no rain and none forecast. A little bit of breeze but we’ve all experienced much worse. Also a nice day for a walk in the Galloway Hills, let alone shooting.

We were soon set up and ready to rock and roll, by about 10:30. How would folks be at getting on the paper after the 3 month lay-off? Well not too bad at all most where there or there abouts very quickly thanks two four spotting scopes in capable hands.

Four factory sporters up first, some rusty starts but soon folks were getting all on the paper and in the main groups tending to be better as the relays progressed, unfortunately for one it went the wrong way, they got bigger but that benchrest shooting.

Next four light guns and single digit groups and aggregates starting to appear. The wind was still behaving itself and not gusting too much – good group’s guys.

It had earlier been agreed that the Heavy Guns will shoot four 5 shot groups, this will be the case throughout the season except for the annual competition with Diggle when it will be four 10 shot groups. So two heavy guns up now. Young Emily Lenton in her first shoot here managed to say in single digits getting better every relay.

Change the butts crew now, thanks for your efficient efforts, let’s see what the others can do.

Four more light guns, unfortunately one took an embarrassing 17 shot to get on the board….when resetting your scope after a shoot always remember to wind it the right way!! Wind is starting to pick up a bit – authors excuse. Also the barrel heat haze/mirage is now quite noticeable and with the sun (yes the sun!) shining on the backstop it was a bit difficult to clearly see the targets. Group sizes up and down a bit but many with very respectable numbers.

Final relay of the day, 3 light guns and a factory sporter. Well done to Lewis, it’s always good when the youngers wup their Dads, 4th smallest group of the day. David Leslie landing some good groups with his factory sporter, obviously getting the best conditions of the day – sorry!

All done!

Thanks again to the butts crew everything ran smoothly and efficiently again.

Great to meet up with everyone for the new seasons competition, and good surprise to come across some unexpected visitors from Diggle.......hope you enjoyed the day guys. Unfortunately with there being no hythe frames to man it can be a long day if you're in an early detail but hopefully the crack makes up for it :-) .

Thanks for doing the report Tony.

With Darrel's indulgence, just to re-iterate what was said at the end of the shoot, rather than just shooting for small groups as has been done as interest was built up, the competition will be run as a league shoot this year. There are 10 dates slated for the year at the moment, however as most will know we will probably loose some due to weather. Also, to allow for some non-attendences the competition will run on a dropped score basis as follows - 6 from 10, 5 from 8 or 4 from 6 depending on how many dates are lost.

Even though we are running competitions we are always happy to welcome along anyone wanting to give 1000yds a go, however we do ask that you know your mv's and zero yardage....we will do our best to get you on target as long as you have enough elevation available in your scopes (roughly 25 to 40 moa dependant on calibre).

This year we'd also like to spread the marking duties about to allow the guys that do the early slots a chance to shoot in the traditionally calmer conditions ;-) .

As for my shoot.....what can I say. Crap 1st group of the season but improved greatly. Still annoyed about the 6 incher though. Lol

Can you confirm what the dates are and how folk like myself get in touch if we would like to/are able to attend?

Thanks

Gary - we've set Sunday July 24th aside for a trip to the Gelston Range. This will count as a Championship round for the UKBRA 1000 yd Championship.

That doesn't stop you going any other time of course.

Hi Vince, I fancy going to that one so who do I contact to attend?

JCS and weejohn. Apologies for not answering your queries myself but I'm glad to see that you've got the information you requested. Onslow52 (Darrel) is the man to speak to if you're interested in coming along. As I said, it can be a long day while you're not shooting but the crack makes up for it :-), they really are a friendly bunch of guys that attend. It also allows those with less benchrest and long distance experience the opportunity to glean information from those that have been doing it a while.

it also gives the guys who are not sure if its really for them or not, the chance to find out for themselves that its not quite as daunting as it could at first seem ;)

Probably a daft question but what size are the targets you use at a 1000 yard, I've never been to a range before but fancy coming up and having a go sometime.
