MrCetrizine
I know this keeps coming up and it never goes anywhere but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/105947

bradders
The problem with these is that they are all based on giving us back .22 pistols for UIT/Olympic style shooting, which if granted wouldn't be what most people wanted them for. They envisage themselves shooting .22 1911's/Glocks/Sigs etc in practical, Bianchi and PP type events and not the single shot, one handed with one eye blinkered type competitions....and this is why I think these approaches/petitions are wrong. For me, either give everything back or don't even bother

AckImp
I'll sign it, as I always do, but can't help but feel it's the wrong approach. What we need is legislation that works to prevent the wrong people having guns. Licence the individual, not the equipment. I'm deemed responsible and competent enough to be allowed to own and use a 13 shot shotgun but I can't have a .22" Pistol? Ludicrous.
MrCetrizine
I agree that what we need and deserve is a better licensing system and restriction/derestriction of firearms based on facts and not emotions. However, that kind of change would be a massive pill for the government, police and public to swallow and I don't think it would ever happen in one go if at all. Especially as nobody seems to be doing anything meaningful besides paying lip service to shooters. If this petition is successful and it's not impossible then it's a small step and a minor court case on the lines of, "If they can have single shot pistols for ISSF competition, why can't we have a 6 shot revolver for service pistol or a 10 shot semi auto for practical?". Small steps with minor concessions stands us more chance of change than a wholesale shakeup of legislation.
bradders
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much more or less successful will this petition be in relation to the one before that and the one before that?, and the one before that?, and the one before that? etc
buddy.223
signed again, must get the mrs and friends to do also - as a pistol shooter in NI im dismayed at the lack of support for this, lets hope the anti handgun contingent over here don't latch onto it. MrCetrizine
That's the thing that irritates me. Every shooter I meet wants pistols and semi auto rifles back but almost none will actually do something as simple as clicking a link and telling the people who can change things that they want change. This petition and its predecessors will probably top out at less than 10% of UK shooters and go nowhere. And when it does, thousands of shooters who didn't sign it will continue whining that they miss pistols and we should do something.
maximus otter
^ This. Even if it accomplishes nothing else it reminds people of the fact that we used to be allowed to own pistols, and makes politicians aware that we still resent their theft from us. Let's keep the issue in the public eye. maximus otter

I understand what you're saying and I know it's the idea behind trying to get .22"s back first. However, I think that if there were a review of the entire system, it might be easier to sell to Government/Police/Joe Puke. Let some politician rally around saying that he's going to make sure that the owners of firearms are going to be more rigorously checked, blah, blah. I still can't help but feel it's pie in the sky. I support every shooting faction and always sign these things and write to my MPs etc. but you get the feeling that all that's going to happen is we'll limp along as is until the next tragedy/accident brings shooting into the public eye again. MrCetrizine
This is a genuine question: Does anyone know what organisations such as the NRA or BASC are doing to change the licencing system or derestrict firearms? I read the magazines and bulletins but it seems like they are doing nothing. Nobody seems to be actually doing anything but talk. I'm going to write to both and officially ask them what's going on but if anyone knows of any real measures being taken, I'd be interested. CliveWard
Hi All, Sharing via your social media network is the way to go to get the word out there on this one. In 5 hours we've had nigh on 500 views on our fb page alone. I'm no genius at political lobbying but I would imagine the 10,000 mark could be time to write an initial letter to your MP to start the ball rolling with your local representation and then perhaps follow up if and when it reaches the stage for debate. Essentially, if you make it an issue, it will become one. Pistol shooting is highly engaging and accesible, especially for new target shooters and .22 rimfire is as economical a round as they come so it could inject a lot of new talent and business / jobs into the sport. Signed, but we all know that firearms legislation isn't actually based on logic but on emotional reactions to tragedies. After all they tried to justify the pistol ban with the assertion that 'small firearms' are 'especially dangerous'.
MrCetrizine
It's not really about target pistols or full bore pistols or centre fire rifles or stalking or "tactical" competitions or any other single activity or item. It's about telling the government over and over and over that there are thousands of shooters in this country that have both the ability and desire to vote for what they want. So far though, there seem to only be a few people who care and a massive amount who don't care enough about shooting to spend 30 seconds letting the government know they exist. I bet if mumsnet got it in their heads to get stalking banned, they'd have a hundred thousand signatures in a week. Stand up and be counted. The trouble with people in this country is, we all just roll over and accept everything that governments deal out, Perhaps we should take a leaf out of the French book, and be more pro active in making our feelings known,
bradders
You see the thing is, i'm curious about the whole thing here, and think the originators of this/these petitions are somewhat disingenuous...and as we live in a free society, I am therefore free to challenge this. You all keep saying we should be given them back "as a start" Well centrefire handguns were banned before rimfire ones, but I don't see many petitions asking for those back Why? are they too scary? What makes a .22 pistol any less dangerous or less concealable than a full bore one? If you can be trusted with one then you can be trusted with any. Now, in the still from the video, it shows one of these Is that what you really want? Coz if it is and you're all so mad keen to shoot UIT/ISSF type pistol disciplines, then a quick glance at Pardinis website shows this and the blurb says this "FPE - FPM Long arm - UK version Specifically developed and produced for the UK in compliance with the Firearms Act. Barrel length mm 300 and total length 600 mm. For any further information you can contact our official and sole dealer" So how many of you have these already? I reckon the answer is not very many, coz you don't want those, you want .22 Glocks, Sigs and 1911's etc, so you can play practical pistol and practise your holster draws. Now there's nothing wrong with that, so why not go down that route? Furthermore, if the planets did align and Chuck Norris cried baby tears and the Govt relented and permitted .22 pistols.....but only in single shot .22 format (as you portray in the video still), how many would actually bother to get the variation when all they want to do is mag dump Point Break stylee? I want them all back, but baby first steps will do. Nothing makes .22s less dangerous/concealable than centrefires, but you don't achieve results in politics without concessions. Perhaps 1, 2 or 5 years with just .22s, then a government might be a little more likely to grant us centrefires. Simply pouting and thcreaming "We want it all!" hasn't worked. Let's try something different. maximus otter
