maximus otter
I've just secured my first ever permission: almost a square mile of arable land in East Anglia. The terrain is billiard-table flat, and is bordered for a few hundred yards by small woods (not included in my shoot). The landowner has given me permission to shoot any legal quarry from muntjac/CWD down to rats. I shall be using my 6.5 x 55mm Sako Finnlight and my .22LR Sako Finnfire Varmint initially. I may also have to buy a .223 ( ) , but not yet. I have all the kit you'd expect: Leica binos, Leupold laser rangefinder, good knives, maps etc. My question is: What piece of kit is there that no-one typically thinks of, but without which you wouldn't go out shooting? An odd, specialised tool or device, or improvised thing-a-ma-jig, that makes your day safer, easier, more effective or just more fun? maximus otter

Akeld
Wind meter, if you have a smart phone, one of the ballistic apps, and if you are alone, look at installing "man down" which notifies people if something might happe to you
jcampbellsmith
My ghillie doesn't come stalking with me any more, but when she did, the success rate went up as she would wait at an agreed point up wind and pick me up. This usually meant I could spend more time stalking into the wind. Having someone or at least a vehicle waiting up wind is a help. I sometimes stalk with a friend who will drop me off, drive on and park. I stalk to the vehicle, then drive on into the wind and pick him up. gbal
Copy of your FAC (delete address detail for security if dropped) and written permission:then you are much less likely to have to stop if challenged.... Small bar chocolate/similar- a psychological comfort when things are slow. Yellow ribbon on vehicule keys,if carried-if you lose them, much more likely to find again! gbal

gunner
Condoms Just kidding , i always take a few home made wind flags and place them in strategic places , its when you may be waiting by a wood or hedge row and the wind reads still on the kestrel , but down range i can see my flag thru bins and can read them well . Also when wind switches ! I keep meaning to make some permanent ones that arnt to obvious . Good luck have fun on your new shoot . Its an exciting time that .
