Read the bit about barrel twist.

Most 22-250 are set up for light bullets.

Yes,and some competitions are restricted to 223/308...(FTR?) ....whatever one's view, that's the rules for that game....and I suppose, lots of us have 223s -perhaps for other uses-and want to see what it might do....

I can't see that much point in a getting a 22/250 IF you want distance-243 will outshoot it! And on it goes.... :-)

F-Class originated in Canada mongst her 'Target Rifle' competitors, and for local historical reasons (subsidised 5.56mm and 7.62mm milspec ammo provided to the DCRA of which the IVI 5.56mm 62gn version was far superior to the 7.62) were also early adopters of 5.56mm, later .223 Rem in TR and then F-Class, still later F/TR when it appeared.

This interest in centrefire 22s led the Canucks to experiment widely with the calibre, one early (pre-F/TR) move being to try .22-250 with the 80gn Sierra MK (best bullet available at the time) at 3,100-3,200 fps in fast-twist barrels. Unfortunately, barrel accuracy life was soon found to be around 1,000 rounds, so it was a pretty shortlived innovation. Incidentally, from what a Canadian F-Class shooting contact tells me, the country's precision shooters are less well served than we or the Americans are in terms of gunsmiths and rifle builders likewise importers or homegrown manufacturers of specialist components including stocks and actions, so both new builds and jobs like rebarrelling are slow and expensive.

I hear you on the distance thing - the only reason my 1:14 barrel doesn't annoy me more bullet choice wise is that I have a .308 :)

Although I have a 22-250, it's more by chance than design over a .223 (cheap and in the shop whilst I had a free slot for '22cf'), so I'm not a 22-250 fanboy or anything. However, I run a load in my 22-250 pushing 55grn vmax @ around 3375fps. Basically hot .223 speeds...so why buy a .223?

Right now it shoots like a .223, but tomorrow once I've loaded up the 40grn vmax I bough earlier, I'll be working up to around 4000fps.

Seems flexible to me?

Given the chance to buy new however, I'd be irritated that it is basically Savage or slow twist barrels wise. Although I suppose there aren't that many 1:8 type factory options in .223 either (they just happen to include good rifles like the T3!).

Anyway, nonsense age old argument subject and well off topic! :)
