.17hmr Barrel re-bore

Here is a question for Baldie and other experienced Gun Smiths.

I bought a left hand cooper 57 in .17hmr for a good price, having used the rifle i tend to agree with Baldie- its very marginal for foxes and drifts too much with the wind.

Could i send the rifle to border barrels to get the barrel re bored to .22 magnum, would it be a cost effective solution against getting Brian Fox to order me a new barrel.

Can a barrel be fine tuned to shoot the .22magnum 33 grains as opposed to the 40 grains rounds.

legion,

Not sure about the prices, but I suspect it would be more expensive to rebore as it doesn't seem to common over here.

More importantly, I think when you rebore a barrel you need to keep the same twist rate as the riflings are used as the guides to cut the new bore and riflings. In that case, you'd end up with a 10 twist, which would be a bit fast for the tiny 22 cal bullets.

Sounds like a better option would be to spec an 18 or 16 twist barrel and start from new.

Thanks,

Rick
