284Win - Powder Choice

Hi All

Given that H4831SC is not available anymore, I need some pointers on powder for a 284Win....... 30 inch barrel, good custom action etc etc

180gr Berger VLD's will be the bullet of choice...

Options are N165 or N560, what's people's thoughts.......

Quickload says I will get more speed and less pressure with the N560, I know that 5 series powders may eat barrels, but that aside what are people's real world experiences of either powder?

N165 and 160 worked for me with my shehane just shy of 2900 and I believe that RS powders equivalent also are viable options

Hi currently using viht 165 moderate load 53.0 mv 2491.

Doing load development to get a better MV using scenar L180.

Hiya.

N165 using 55.5 grains. Getting 2,800 fps with Sierra 180 grain MK's, but out of a 34'' barrel

I use 55.2 gr n160, 180gr moly bullets achieve 2950fps, 32” barrel.

N160 pushes the 180 grainers a little faster than N165.

Justin's barrel spits them out pretty damned fast.

My 284 barrel is 26 inch and I don't get anywhere near that speed

In the process of load development with 180gr ELD-M using N165 out of a 28", 56.7gr with an OAL of 3.370. SD is generally around the 9, 0.3gr more or less same results.

Two pals running theres,  one ELD-M,  one Berger,  both getting excellent results with N160.

Try N165, speed with low SD is achievable, along with accuracy

As I have read in other forums the 160 gets a very low SD and enough speed for a node over 2900 feet

I am retesting the 180gr ELD match bullets the weekend from 1000yds so it is a good test at that range. The previous 100yds tests showed some promise.

If you don't care about barrel life then RS60 will push the 180s at warp speed, I could get 2915fps from 52 to 52.5grs I think out of a 26 inch barrel.
