Stock stiffening

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Somone I know has a savage model 12 benchrest model and it shoots great off a sand bag .3moa easy. Put a bipod on the front and it opens up to about 2moa.

The stock has an aluminium bedding block in but it still flexes quite a bit which I'm guessing is the reason it dosent shoot well off a bipod.

So has anyone ever tried stiffening a synthetic stock and how easy and successful was it? And what products are needed?

Thanks

If the stock has internal lateral webs it may be possible to insert alloy or carbon rods to help stiffen

The nylon stocks don’t have very good adhesive properties so it may be a fools errand to try when a replacement stock may be the better long term option

Often the most flex is just between front webbed area and the bed block meaning even if one makes the forend stiffer it does not really help that much. A wooden stock is a bit easier as they glue a bit better and one can mill out some of the bedding and replace with a reinforced bedding that is part of the forend strengthening. Structural fibres running from under the bedding to the front. Very tedious work and will hardly be perfect. Better would be to invest in a composite stock that has that all in already. ICS internal carbon structure.
