1000 yard Benchrest Competition Sunday 16th July 2017

Firstly apologies for the lateness of this report, Bruce and I have had some family/business issues over the last two weeks that have taken priority. However, the wait will be worth it?

As I left the M62 at Saddleworth the cloud was low and visibility was bad, with a capital B, think we’d have struggled to manage 100yards let alone 1000. However, at Diggle it was neigh too bad, and a prompt start looked likely.

After a slow start, think folks are now delaying their arrival commensurate with a 10:00am start, we have registered 35 shooters - 11 Heavy Guns, 8 Sporters and 16 Light Guns. Most are returning faces but welcome to Peter Davie, Frank Stacey and Ross MacDonald, like your’s truly from Bonnie Scotland, for them 7+ hour drive away, and to Rob Dunlea-Jones. Again a few regulars are missing but great to see the continuing trend of 30+ shooters.

So just after 10:00 and we’re ready to go, Light Guns first – 4 details.

Detail One: 4 Light Guns, as last month these first 4 have been specially selected as they claim they know their zero’s and will be straight on the paper – yep true to their word they’re on and sighting in is quick and easy. Already the second detail are using the “anyman” to great effect. The wind seems a little more innocuous than normal but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, what do the figures say? Well its clear from the first groups that this could be a day for small groups as Chris Maunder takes the honours with just under 4.5” followed by Sean Broxham at 6.7”, then Phil Sammons 8” and Mal Roberts at 11”. Good start guys will it last? Relay 2; oops for some things are bit bigger, but Mal has found his rhythm and manages just under 7”, Sean just under 9”, Phil out to 13” and Chris 20”. So it’s Sean with the early lead.

Detail Two: 4 Light Guns, as said above we’ve all made use of the “anyman” target and again sighting in on the paper is quick. Relay 1; Jack Gibb has it with 7”, Ian Dixon and Vince Bottomley not too far behind at 8” and 9” and yours truly at 12”, OK but I’d rather be closer to the others! Relay 2; Ian ahead this time at 7”, myself at a bigger 7”, Jack at 8” and Vince in the 12’s this time. Look out Sean we’re on your tail!

Back to Detail One for their third and final relays. Relay 3; Sean concentrates his early lead with a 5.5”, Mal back out to 10” and Phil and Chris still in the mid-teens at 14” and 15”. Relay 4 and it’s clearly now between Mal and Sean; Mal concentrates and gets a 5” group, whilst Sean has to settle for mid–teens at 13” with Phil back in single digits at 9” and Chris still in the teens at 13”. So after their 4 relays Mal is agg’ing 8.4 and Sean 8.6, close but it always is. Chris still has the smallest group but others have shown that today they’re likely to be small.

Detail Two again. Relay 3, 3 tidy groups here, I manage 4.5” (but just off Chris’s by 30 thou), Jack at 6.5”, Vince at 8” and Ian has the mid-teens at 13. So all eyes on Jack if he keeps this up he’ll romp into the lead – will he? Relay 4; well that’s the small group away as Ian hits 3.6”, I manage 6”, Vince 7” but Jack slips out to 15”. So what’s it look like now? I have the early lead with an agg. of 7.6”, Ian hard on my heals at 7.9 then Mal and Sean, but there are plenty yet to shoot.

Detail Three, 3 Light Guns and 1 Sporter. Relay 1; Alex Carson has the honours with 9.3”, Adrian Evans and Luke Wadsworth both with just under 11” but Paul Parkinson has primer problems and unfortunately has to record 5 penalties. Relay 2; its Alex again at 7.4”, Adrian and Luke together again in the high 10’s, and Paul shows what he can do with 5 shots on the paper at 16”.

Detail Four, the last 4 Light Guns (save for Mr Jackson who will shoot after lunch). Relay 1; Steve Dunn and Jeanette Whitney open with high 6’s, Steve just a touch ahead, Simon Mearns (always one to watch out for) at 8” and Mike Perdaux in the 12’s. Relay 2; well its clearly Jeanette here with a great 5.8”, Steve 13”, Simon 15” and Mike Perdaux 19”, on lookers point out that a couple of shooters caught a wind shift – think the number say who. So Jeanette is putting the pressure on.

Back to Detail Three. Relay 3; Luke has the best as groups open up, at 10”, Alex and Adrian to all intents and purposes the same in the 15’s and Paul is cursing his primers again and retires. Final group for detail three; Alex is back into single figures at 9.5”, Luke at 11”, Adrian at 13”.

So no changes in the leader board, but the final groups for detail four could make a mess of thing!

Detail Four, Relay 3; I said Simon was to be watched 5.4”, Jeanette 8”, Mike 9” and Steve another 13”. All eyes are clearly on Jeanette anything less than about 9” and she’s the leader! Relay 4; Small groups all round, Simon low 6’s, Mike high 6’s Steve 9.8” and Jeanette 8.3” but unfortunately plus 1P!!! Jeanette subsequently finds that the case from last shot in her final group had split its neck, bets Jeanette wanted to ring it’s neck, hard luck some pretty tidy and consistent groups.

Just after 12:30 lunchtime.

So of we go again, about 13:15. Detail One: 3 Heavy guns and 1 Light gun, will Mr Jackson “rock the boat”? Relay 1; opening salvo’s are similar to the morning’s pattern, Dave Jackson at 8.6” from Mary Marsden at 8.8”, then Dale Almond and Jochen Schultz at 9.6” and 10.2”. Relay 2; Dave keeps it there in fact slightly smaller at 8.4”, in the Heavy Guns it’s still Mary from Dale and Jochen at 12”, 14” and 15” respectively.

At this point Ian, Mal and I are getting twitchy in the butt’s - Dave is too close for comfort.

Detail Two, all Heavy Guns. Relay 1; Darrell Evans opens with a good group around 8” Rob Dunlea-Jones and Laurie Holland at 11”, then Steve Roberts at 13”. Relay 2; Darrell, and Laurie both just short of 18”. Rob 22” and Steve Roberts 24” with two penalties. Now this is not like any of these guys, what has happened? The collective wisdom of the butts is that the wind has started to pick up….. will it stay like this or return to the pleasanter levels of the morning?

Back to Detail One. Relay 3; looking at most of the groups the wind has “eased” back again, Jochen just under 8”, Mary just over 8” Dale 10” but Dave has 20”. Fourth and final relay; Jochen another just under 8” Dale just under 10”, Mary 12” and Dave 11”, has Dave done enough? Sorry Mr Jackson, it’s not enough to disturb the leader board. As far as the Heavy Guns go it’s Jochen from Mary then Dale, all quite close.

Back to Detail Two. Relay 3; unfortunately the wind is up again and so are the groups, Laurie gets the best of it but it’s still 12”, Darrell and Rob 18” and Steve just shy of 23”, these are big groups from very competent shooters. Their final relay; Darrell get the best at 12”, Steve Roberts 17”, but Rob and Laurie have 4 and 5 penalties to boot. When did Laurie last have multiple penalties? It is clear the wind has changed but by so much? It must be worse nearer the firing point.

Detail Three, just 3 Heavy Guns. Relay 1; quite a spread; Jonathan Walker 5.6” ( this subsequently proves to be the Heavy Gun small group of the day – well done), he’s obviously picked the right condition, as has Alan Maughan at just under 7” with Jim Marsden at 17”. Can Jonathan and Alan repeat the exercise? Relay 2; simple answer no – Jim does best at a tad under 12”, Jonathan at 14” but Alan is out to 18+” unfortunately this is by far the biggest group Alan has shot here this season, maybe you waited too long for the right condition, which didn’t materialise.

Detail Four, 4 Sporters. Relay 1; again the wind is not being kind to these guys, Paul Pendleton fairs best with 16”, Graham Watts loses one off the board for 17” plus 1P, but Toni Yong and Morse are in the 30’s. Relay 2; all do better as the wind subsides a bit, but I guess they still don’t like the numbers, Paul 13”, Graham and Morse at 15” and Toni 23”.

Back to Detail Three for their Relay 3; Jonathan holds it well at 12”, Jim Marsden out to the 30’s and Alan only gets one on the board, wind? From the look of it there group on the sand didn’t look too bad, but sorry I realise this no comfort. Relay 4; Jim is best with 16”, Jonathan at 24” and Alan takes the opportunity to try a new technique, which clearly needs refining as there are only two shots counting, but they were close.

With all the Heavy Guns having completed their 4 groups it becomes abundantly clear that the first Detail after lunch had the pick of the wind as first, second and third are all from this first Detail and all within 0.8” of each other and 3-4” ahead of the subsequent Details. Sorry guys just the luck of the draw!

Detail Four again. Relay 3; mixed fortunes in this wind Graham makes it 10” pretty good, Morse at 18” Toni and Paul in the 19’s. Relay 4; things open up again, except for Paul who is back to 15”, then Toni at 22”, Graham 23” and Morse 30”.

Detail Five, final detail, all 4 are Sporters. Relay 1, how will our visitors from North of the border fair? First honours to Alan Seagrave, mind you he has had plenty of practise in the past, with 14”, Frank Stacey at 20”, Ross McDonald 26” and Peter Davie, 10” but sorry wait for it Peter 3 penalties. Relay 2; for Alan and Frank very similar numbers Ross get a significant improvement to 18” and Peter gets them all on the paper at 32”.

Time to let the barrels cool.

Detail Five again. Relay 3; Alan, same ball park at 13”, Frank just under 9” with unfortunately one off the paper, but that’s still only 18”, Ross also has one off and 20” but it’s Peter who continues his improvement to 22” – well done. Relay 4, the final relay of the day; Alan, very consistent and actually even better at 11”, Peter keeps it there or there abouts at 24”, Frank only gets one on the paper, and Ross loses one off the paper and 31”.

Sporters; so as we close it’s Alan Seagrave from Paul Pendleton and Graham Watts, with Graham getting the smallest group. Apologies to Graham and Alan – I miss present Alan with the small group certificate, patch and the £10 at the prize giving.

All done, circa 15:30, not bad at all and thanks to all the shooters to helping move the pace forward.

So thanks to Vince and Jim for RO’ing, Mary and Jeanette for spotting, this new idea of the “anyman” target is helping reduce sighting in times, and the Butt’s Offices Laurie and Willy and all other helpers.

So there seems to be general consensus that the Morning shooters had the best of the weather and the first detail post lunch the best of the afternoon weather.
