600 yard Benchrest Completion Sunday 5th February 2017

Firstly, although it is now into February, Happy New Year to all our readers

Round 4 of this year’s 600yard series.

This is getting a bit repetitive, at 9 o’clock not a ripple on the water, however by “kick-off” time this time it is still flat calm and the flags are lymph (I know how they feel) – but is there wind out there that we cannot see?

Again we have a very full house, 34 shooters; 12 Heavy Guns and 19 Light Guns and 3 Factory Sporters. Welcome to Alex and Elle Rind for their first competition – good luck.

Today its Heavy Guns and Factory Sporters up first.

First detail 3 Heavy Gun’s and a Factory Sporter. Ah first Dale falls by the wayside without firing a shot, the long layoff over Christmas has grabbed its first victim – right rifle wrong bolt! Then Les Prior hits a problem in his first group after the first 2 shots - he can’t get it in – I mean the cases, so quickly the 4 becomes 2. Early groups are quite respectable, if it stays like this it could be a day for small groups. Detail two is a mixture of 2 Heavy Guns, 1 Light Gun and 1 Factory Sporter, again groups are respectable and with most, but not all, sub 4”. Back to relay one – there’s been a significant wind shift as seen by the “gratuitous sighter”. As the groups come in it looks like the odd person might have twiddle the scope the wrong way and penalties are taken, however Laurie leads the way hitting the mid 2’s. Relay 2 again and Mike Marsh is trying hard – not satisfied with the 2’s he’s now in the one’s with a final group of 1.818”. Les has sorted his issue and runs his 4 groups, whoa this guy is trying, 1.9” to start with then a 2 and a 3 and finishing with a 1.638. This new 6 BR with its GB Barrel is sure going well, but there’ll have to be a “Stewards Inquiry” about his first group!

Detail three, 3 Heavys and a Factory Sporter, mixed results with a few incurring penalties. Darrel Evans is in the 3’s but look out Steve Roberts is at it again two 2’s, great start. Details 4 all Heavys but Simon Drake hits the buffers – why? ALL three shooters, Mary Marsden, Jane Lowe and Jochen Schulz have two 2’s and are pushing Steve Roberts for top spot, but can they do it again in the next few minutes? Back to detail three; Darrel has one in the low 2’s but Steve Roberts is really trying with two more in the 2’s to make it all four groups in the 2’s will this be a record? Detail 4 up again, can Mary, Jane and Jochen hold their nerves? Jane has one in the low 2’s but unfortunately group 3 is off the paper and attracts 5 penalties – ah! Unfortunately Mary and Jochen slip into the 3’s and 4’s so top dog is Steve Roberts.

So we have Steve Roberts with and Agg. of 2.539” and Les Prior with an Agg. of 2.321”, but Les did have the opportunity to re-run his first group after his “gun issues”. After reflection and discussion it is agreed that to be fair to all Les’s original first group with included 2 shots and 3 penalties should be counted (not the re-run group of 1.9”) so we are pleased to confirm that Steve Roberts now has the new UKBRA 600yard Heavy Gun Agg. record at 2.539” (was held by Laurie Holland at 2.582” from 2013) –well done. However Les did achieve the Heavy Gun small group of the day at 1.638” and he knows just what his 6BR will do.

As for the Factory Sporters, Toni Young and her trusty .308 have kept it together so Toni takes the Factory Sporter Agg. and Small Group with a respectable 3.832” – not bad, well less than 1 M.O.A.

Lunch – now the Light Guns, as they say “Big Boy’s class” – not sure why. And still the water is ripple free, but as the Heavy Guns and Factory sports have found out there is wind out there and it does switch.

Detail one, Gary Stewart has a smile on his face, his first group 1.715”, not a record but tidy to say the least, only Dave Jackson get anywhere near having one in the 2’s, unfortunately nothing else is startling. Detail two, now this is better Mike Perdeaux has a 2” and a 3” but Jeanette has two in the 2’s, unfortunately Andy Fellerman is another casualty and has to retire. Back to detail one; mainly OK groups but it’s Jack Gibb who takes the honours with a great group of 1.587”. Sure Jack is asking himself “how I can get a 1” and a 9” in the space of 10 mins”? Detail two again; will Jeanette keep her cool? Yes Jeanette keeps it together with a low 3 and a low 2 this puts her in the lead so far with an Agg. in the mid 2’s.

Detail three; Sean starts with 1.809” and follows it up with a mid 2’s so the pressure is on, Mal Roberts has mid 2’s and a low 3 with the other lurking in around the 4’s. Things are hotting up. Detail four, just 3 shooters this time; 4’s, 3’s and just the one 2 from Vince Bottomley – need to be doing better guys to catch the others! Back to Detail three; mainly 3’s and 4’s but its Mal Roberts who comes out on top with two low/middle 2’s to grab the lead from Jeanette. Detail four let’s see what you can do, Bruce Lenton makes it all 4 in 3’s but that won’t crack it today, Vince has a 2 and 3 but again not enough and Emily keeps it tidy but unfortunately, though below 0.75 M.O.A., it’s not enough.

Final detail of three light guns and Dale finally getting to have a go so one Heavy Gun. Phil Sammons has the best results in the first two groups with a low 3 and a low 2. Now for the final two groups, Phil is going to have to dig deep if he’s to get an agg. down in the two – unfortunately whilst still having reasonable groups not today was the cry. In fairness to these final four shooters, as viewed from the club house, the wind has picked up a little and they probably had the worst of the day’s wind – but still a calm day by Diggle standards.

So a great day, with a few folks suffering issues, a “Stewards Inquiry”, a new record and some quite remarkable groups. When did we have the three top agg.’s in both Light and Heavy Gun ALL in the 2’s and another 10 in the 3’s? And the Light Gun League turned right on its head!

A great start to the year.
