Hi which of the two would be better for a beginner wanting to eventually learn to shoot out to 700-1000 yards (targets). At present I only have experience stalking with an 8x56 s+b and my longest kill with that's about 250 I'd want to occasionally use it for stalking aswell.

I'd opt for the 5-20x56 scope - 20x is the minimum I'd want to use for such distances, a 6-24 or 5-25 scope would be even better.

 

I have a Swarovski 6-24x50 scope which is excellent for long range work - see page 3 on the link below, I bought mine from the same source, it was unused on a rifle having been ex display stock, the original price was around twice the current sale.
