Taking the skill out of shooting...high tech

Brilliant technology and I would have thought it was a great idea for 'sporting' purposes as it should ensure clean kills every time instead of possibly maiming with a rushed or pulled shot.

Thats not how hunting works or we would use RPG`s :)

It does everything - except read the wind......... So it doesn't ensure clean kills.

There's a youtube video called Code Red with Stephen Hawking - (wind on the first bit to find the shooting part) where a presenter (Jim Alkaleli) who has never pulled a trigger before takes on an army sniper at 1000 yards.....

Tracking Point Precision Guided Firearm has been in development since 2011,on sale since 2014.

Nothing new in the rifle or ammo-the aiming system does offer some features.

There are very few objective reviews of the system in use ( but see refs..one is much better than "Holy Sh*t..I'm a bad ass"-the CEO speaks way better than that....

The scope is aimed at target, and the target "tagged" with a trackable dot, then pulling the trigger activates the ballistic solver and shot release/trigger stabiliser and fires only when all aligned.

Trigger jerk is eliminated the claim is for a 1/2 inch at 800 versus 4" for an "elite marksman".

As with any good ballistic solution, hold over (and all the variables) iarecalculated by the electronics, and applied to the trigger reease....removes human factors. Some implications that 'off hand' is possible...didn't seem very accurate-but no decent tests done.

OK trigger error, and some wobble is much reduced. A good rest and light trigger accomplish much the same. Scope doing all the ballistics is fast, probably error free-subject to the discrimination allowed by the 'tag' dot....

BUT,as per GP and TS-it does NOT do wind -though wind can be entered manually, just as with a Kestrel/balistic solver.....it's not part of the continuous update -that is just the system aligning the tag with the scope again.

Hmmmm yes,it can give quick results for the novece-so long as an 'elite wind reader' does all that bit... (so can a decent LR rifle on a good rest...but not a 'hunting environment). CEO calls it 'democratising accuracy-it reduces the entry requirements for sport shoooting"; cf the novice lady who thinks she's a "bad ass".....

Field 'demos'....seems ok on IPSC targets to 800+ Yards . Field hunting feral pigs-well,not convingingly-if you can't find a hit animal......who knows where the failure was?

Two comments from PGF shooters: "you've still got wind calling" ..and .."....a little left, the wind picked up"

...sound familiar?

ref

"The gun that aims itself" Motherboard video mainly sensible comment from CEO(avoids the nonsense ads-there is no bullet guidance system, after trigger pull....unlike smart missiles; gets a little goofy when developing a system to send it all to buddies on their smart phones...while you hunt....and/or video games)

US military -of course-are allegedly testing it.Has the somewhat dodgy real pig shoot stuff.... 27 minutes all in,but covers/not better than most sources.

"Insane accuracy" Next Level Sh*t series- instant bad ass /gee whizz level of presentation, but thankfully short.

System with Surgeon rifle (good choice) and 200custom ammo (balistically set for scope)--$20,000

Probably too late for a xmas disappointment.Just shoot your rifle on low wind days meanwhile....:-)

Apparently, the original idea of the concept was to reduce the time for training a military sniper from around 14 weeks to two weeks. But, with a price tag of around $17,000 it might have saved time - but money?

Cant see how it possibly could reduce cost , if you take into a count paying Directing Staff etc , that said I think its a gimmick , as others have said it does not read wind.

Gimmick or not, it's an impressive bit of kit.

I got to shoot it at 1000 yards in Vegas a couple of years ago but, watching a guy who'd never pulled a trigger in his life before compete against a trained army sniper at 1000 yards was impressive. In fact, the presenter hadn't even dry-fired the 300Win Mag he used against the sniper. He was shooting off a bi-pod but supporting the butt. They were shooting at gas-filled balloons the size of a melon, bobbing about on strings.

Just watch the video.
