22LR Accuracy Expectation Challenge - 3 consecutive 5 shot groups - Post Photos

I'm always a little frustrated with 22LR accuracy - particularly when I read of others claiming tiny bughole groups at long ranges.

 

 

So, for mutual group education, and based on the premise that "If there isn't a photo, it didn't happen"

 

I'd like to ask people to post photos of 3 x 5 shot groups shot consecutively, on the same piece of paper at a stated range.

 

I'll kick off with this from 1066 (posted in the other thread) Eley HP at 68yds. As Alan said, it'd be easy to cherry pick the two best groups, but, it's the whole target that describes the reality of 22LR.

It isn't brilliant, but peep-hole sights and 100 yards at Otterburn, so am happy .

Top left is Eley Green Box, the other two are CCI.

 

Ignore the bottom right group, I was using Phaedra's 6.5 Creedmore

CCI - horses didn't like the HV cracks, so I didn't fire a third group.

(& a sight adjustment between firing the two groups)

 

 

(Note: One shocker from Eley - which I'm beginning to think is the universal reality of 22LR ammo)

 

So - I reckon '1 MOAish' at 68yds is a realistic expectation for me, prone in a field.

I got to visit the Lapua .22lr test facility in Mesa, AZ 2 years ago and they explained their batch test procedures for us

 

Here's some pics

 

Our friend Darrell from the AZNG and Lapua setting up a customers small bore rifle in the sled for batch testing

 

They have this set up for measuring group sizes at 25 & 50M, and from memory accepted ammo performance is 16mm at 25M and 23mm at 50mm

So in real terms, small bore rifles and their ammo must be capable of 5/8" at 25 and 1" at 50!!! from 10rds, not 3 or 5......from a machine rest

My trusty competition 10/22 is good for around 1/2 MOA I reckon. When I'm testing ammo I hose the first mag of 10 into the sand or into a spare target and then shoot 5 or 6, 5 shot groups. This was shot rested fore and aft at a laser measured 50m; if only I could match it standing unsupported! Also, for what it's worth, I've never seen a .22 that likes SK Standard Plus not shoot that little bit better with SK Rifle Match.

There are only 6 groups, the top left is 10 rounds because I'd changed brand (experience shows this makes a difference). Out of the 6, two are on the minute, two are under and two are over so average at .531 so yeah, the norm's probably about 1MOA. I think it would be fair to say my rifle's capable of 1/2 MOA but the norm is 1 MOA. Shooting off bags, outdoors, on an old aerodrome, possibly introduces a little more error than I'd like. Anyone near Dundee got a 100m shed?...

I think you'll find that no smallbore shooter would bother testing at 25m, all outdoor comps are 50m / 100y.

 

The 50m ISSF bull is 10.4, the screen on the right definitely looks like the 50m target, smallbore shooters quote group sizes outer edge not centre to centre, that group looks like about 12mm, or 7mm centre to centre.

 

16mm at 25m would be sh*t (prone/jacket/sling), even for me and I'm not that good!

Shielded range so zero wind.

I've got a target somewhere where I started at 50yds and worked back to 110yd. 3 shots group at every range.shot across the fields with bipod and a cushion thing for rear support . eley subs used.they are great hunting ammo

Just back in.

 

Gave the rifle a bloomin good strip and clean, including 5 pull throughs with a boresnake, until the bore was glitteringly clean.

 

Made a reasonable back rest and decided to shoot from sitting position.

 

 

Also reduced range to 52yds - which makes it all look much rosier!

 

As suggested by AckImp, blew the dust off some Rifle Match

 

Results....well, SK Rifle match!!! -

Point taken!

Abandoned the Eley HP for a quick 5 with the CCI HV HP - the extra grunt makes subsonic seem positively pedestrian!

 

Bottom line - still trickling along at about 1 MOA (which looks a lot nicer at 52yds than at 68!)

Presumably, that represents the best of everything - great target rifle, tenex, no wind.

 

Hard to judge groups - look to range around 0.7 MOA?

Yes about 0.7 MOA. I was surprised it did so well, I always assumed Tenex would run out of steam at 100m so this is the first time I've tried it.
