Hy Laurent,

thanks for your answer. I think I will use the same moly too. I tried at the beginning this one from China but the bullets are not as smooth as before doing moly coating. Do you do it dry and with ceramic media like in the manual from Lyman? Do you polish them after moly coating too?

Thanks

Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes I use the moly dry with the Lyman 's ceramic kit, and any polysh media, just a long time work ! And after 3h00-4h00, I roll the bullets in a cloth to wipe the exess of moly...

Look at the results : (Hornady 147 gr ELD-Match)

A+

  • 3 weeks later...

I´m on the almost same route.

Working with a Tikka T3x CTR 24" barrel, the 139gr. Lapua Scenar and the 147gr. Hornady ELD-Match gave me the best groups until now.

I´ve had the N150 on hands, going up to the RS 60 and am now testing around with the RS 62.

On the high end QL would give me more velocity with the RS 70, even with the 139gr. bullet, but just almost burn all of the powder (99% at max. P).

VV seems to be a bit out of the race, because none of their powders seems to fill the gap. Again playing around with QL, regarding case volume, burnt powder rate and velocity, N550 seems to be the best option. N160 and 165 are to bulky and N560 is to slow on the books.

So RS 70 is worth a try?

Did anyone test the N550, too?

Cheers,

Jay

Hi Jay,

Happy to read you, yes I tested the HORNADY 147 gr ELD MATCH (OAL = 2.90''!) in my RPR 6.5CM (24'' 5R Barrel)

My magic load with RS 70 give me a good velocity = 2 841 mps with a very good acuracy, with LAPUA Case SRP +CCI 450 ( Picture, 8 Shots at 100 m )

My test with N560 give me a minor accuracy …

About the 139 gr LAPUA the best powder between RS 60 and RS 62 the acuracy is better with the single base RS 62 (norma case LR)

Hey BERGEON,

thanks for your reply.

Holy cow, 2840 t0 2850 with a 147gr. bullet, that´s a lot in a 24" barrel!

Did you test the RS70 with 140gr. bullets too?

As the Hornady´s prices seem to be exploded, I´m tending towards the 139 Lapua (45ct. against 30ct.). So I´m just wondering, if the RS 70 would give more speed to the "lighter" bullets too.

According to QL, the N560 and the N160 are a bit to progressive, the N550 is at max. P with 97% loaded volume.

So on paper, regarding velocity and loaded volume, RS 70 or N550 are close.

I’m with you on the scenars. I have stumbled on a load without much development that shoots really well in my 24” barrel, 1 in 8 twist, just from putting something together with the components I had at the time.

People keep telling me that the load will never work but believe me it does. 139g Lapua Scenar’s over 35.9g N150 sitting about 50 thou off the lands and CCI 400 small rifle primers. I’m getting an average of 2680 fps with an sd in the single figures (just).

At 100 yards I’m getting about 0.7 moa on 5 round groups and it shot about 1.25 moa at 900 yards the other day, although most of my shooting is at 600 on military ranges where I regularly annoy a mate of mine who’s spent hours and significantly more money than me by out shooting him... :)

I’m happy with that and will just keep on keeping on with it. I’d rather have some pretty decent performance than be forever load developing. As a plinky plonker, I’m not striving to win cups, just enjoying reasonably accurate shooting with my mates.

Yes Jay the RS 70 give more velocity with less presure in big loaded volume , I I'm looking for an efficient reload for Long Range so : heavy bullet and high velocity... I prefeer the  147 gr Hornady  for a better BC than the LAPUA scenar 139 gr !

No I dont test this 139 gr with RS70...

But in an another caliber the "lighter" bullet and RS70 work very well too , for example in .243 WIN !

So why no  use the RS70 with the less expensive  6.5 mm 139 gr LAPUA Scenar  ???

(For SMLE : I respect your choise with the EXELENT Lapua scenar 139 gr but for me in à Long Range shooting use , the  New Hornady 153 gr A-TIP MATCH will be a good  issue too…)https://www.hornady.com/bullets/rifle/6.5mm-264-153-gr-a-tip-match#!/
