22lr target upgrade time?

I'm thinking of upgrading my current cz455 16" varmint for somthing more target orientated. Currently I'm shooting indoors 25yards freehand 10 shot score cards mainly and some fun type comps, would also like to do some more work at 100m. I don't do that much vermin shooting with it so I'm thinking of an upgrade more target orientated ,new rifle will still be used in the field for vermin. The new rifle needs be atleast 10shot capacity mag fed and bolt or straight pull, not keen on semi autos. I would also like to use peep sights and a scope, separately, so needs mounting points. What are my options, I'm not made of money but I also want to better my scores , I would sell the cz to free the slot up for the new or secondhand rifle.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated

527 Varmint, the rifle you want is the Anschutz MPR, TAKES 5 OR 10 RND mags and has dovetails frt and rear for diopter sights or scope. I've had one for about 6 mths now and it's a cracking rifle for what you describe.

Some months ago I picked up an old Annie Biathlon for £300 made some mods to suit my purpose which included fitting better butt pad, some mods to stock and in particular had the barrel receive some very special attention resulting in returning the now 15 inch barrel back to producing some consistent "match" performance,,,,here,s some pics,,,,regds ,,,,O

The club I'm in always tend to do 5 or 10 shot timed comps, hence the 10 shot mag need. The 10 shot mag would give me more time to aim steady my aim and breath.

Sounds to me as if the comps are organised by guys who've got 10/22's - You should be able to wipe the floor with them even with the mag change.

Hi,,,527Varmint,,,,the "modded" Biathlon rifle is mag fed,,,I only have the one mag but believe they can still be found/purchased .Mine is a 5 shot{looks like a 10 shot] and mag is shown in the picture ,,,all I need for my purpose,s.As I said this is quite an early rifle ,,later ones I believe have an adjustable cheek piece and all have multiple housing in the stock for additional mags.I filled my magazine housing with a tube to slip nicely in a rear bag for informal benching and the rifle is also light enough to carry for some vermin shooting.Stock is very comfortable with a meaty feel and shapely stippled grip....This model and later ones may not be too easy to find though?,,,,,,O

Never shot the MPR at 100 yet but at 50 it shoots like one holes converted biathlon rifle. Only mod i made was to get the stock comb made adjustable to suit shooting with a scope.

Have a Sako Finnfire Range mk1. Shoots very small groups at 50m with Eley Tenex it is a bit ammo fussy. Quality is very good and if one felt the need easy to rebarrel as the barrels are clamped in

The trigger is OK and can be made very good or jewels triggers were available.....and I seem to remember a UK trigger?

Mags are 10 round and work well with Tenex.

Thanks guys,I'm struggling to find anything local to go have a look at. I'm keeping all options open at the moment. The cz will make a 308 size hole at 25yards with 10 Shots and a £2 coin sized group at 100yards with sk standard plus,sk subs and eley sport.

"you should be able to wipe the floor with them"... 25m Smallbore Precision at the Gallery Rifle Nationals was won with a 10/22.

To the OP: When you say you're shooting "freehand" is it standing unsupported or some other position? if it's standing then the mechanical accuracy of the rifle is really the last part of the equation, especially if your CZ is shooting groups like that. That's not to say that the rifles recommended won't be excellent; I'd love an MPR or a Biathlon Anschutz! I like the idea of being able to swap between irons and a scope too.

I have a Finnfire range Mk1, note if the 20yd unsupported shooting you are doing is LSR it is over the weight limit. Mine isn't now due to the barrel ending at the end of the stock. Stock design is great for standing.

The weight will also be a problem for any heavy barrel Anschutz too. LSR rules are max 4.5Kg including glove if used.

Mags are 10 round and work well with Tenex.

Finnfire has a 10 round mag, but I have found it can jam with Tenex (or Match, must be the bullet shape), the rim gets over the rim of the next round, cant figure out how or why, doesn't happen with any other brand of ammo. Maybe it's just my mag. If it is please let me know so I can get a replacement.

Finnfire doesn't have a way to attach iron sights which I think was one of your requirements.

I doubt you will substantially improve your groups with any .22 over what you describe with the CZ, but as has been said it isn't just about intrinsic accuracy.

It's more of an informal club I shoot with so no weight rules. The 10 shot comp is 25yards indoors freehand sitting at a bench off your elbows. The cz off a bipod and bag will make one round 308 size hole at 25yards with sk subs,sk standard plus and eley sport on 20x with a scope. I'm using it as a training rifle to make me better with the c/f's. I love shooting with iron sights hence wanting a rifle I can switch to and from. I dint have the room or funds to have 2 x 22lr's.

The one rifle that's looking favorite at the moment is the Anschutz biathlon rifle on the previous page. I'm in no rush as doing well with the cz.

Thanks for all the input,i guess practice practice and a bit of help will put me up there for next year's comps.

Cheers Andy
