Baiting Rats into the Open

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a recommended top tip for baiting rats into the open?

-trying to clear some up around an empty grain barn and nearby piles of tyres. Getting a few shots, but wondering if there's something stinky that'd draw a few more out.

Thanks!

Peanut butter works well but to be honest shooting them takes a long time, Rat poison works better. Put it in bags push it into the hole they live in and back fill. They will eat and dig their way out but will be dead before they do.

BAD IDEA

New someone who did just that the rat or something dug the bags back out and the dog eat it :(

Fenn or cage traps, unless you have a real problem smoker and dogs

Old farmers trick was to heat grain on a shovel and leave it in the open near known runs, when the grain was piled high with rats the 12b was deployed to great affect. Not as much fun as sniping one at a time but quicker!

Wasn't dug in far enough then. I've been doing this way for 35 years without a problem

YEP works a treat baited a straw stack with this combo and the .22 pcp with the photon -couldnt shoot them fast enough best total 34 in 2hrs.

best way is to lay it away from there runs and into a place to get a clean shot get set up nice and comfey and have fun.

we got a few with the terriers on saturday, farmer clearing out the grain store for this years harvest good fun.

I know this is old but had to post anyway. Not had a rat shoot for ages now. Used to love it. Had an idea to make feeding stations with a tray and an upright with a solar light on it. That way they'll get used to the light being on evey night. No need for night vision and if you made say three you could put them in different places so when you shoot one you can move to the next instead of waiting for them to come back out. As said, Nutella or peanut butter works but cut it with oil so they have to lap it up instead of running with it. Did start to work on a more solid food like a cattle/horse lick but made out of good stuff.
