Advice on next rifle... .300 vs .260 vs something else

Mac.308

Hmmm there are +/- points as ever....(no trash mil surp seems a bonus to me,if looking for accurate 1000+!!);likewise launch platforms, costs etc etc.

Ballistics though are stubbornly laws of physics:drop/drift at 1000y:

7-08 BC .486 class bullets Nosler,Rem,Fed loads 140 g @2800+ ........333/91 inches

260 .490 Nosler 140@ 2800 .........332/92

308 .503 Fed Sierra MK 175 @ 2600 ..........387/99

7Rem mag .535 Fed nosler 160 @ 2900 ..........287/78

300Win Mag .495 Amax 178 @ 3000 ...........281/82

These are among the best loads,commercially-so comparable,to a few inches.BCs can be much lower, esp for 308 based cases.(708,260,308)

What drop/drift don't reveal is stability issues-simply " on last legs"...the 308 based cases are more sensitive to that,as is well conceded for many 308 loads ,even in 26 barrels (as all are here) as 1000 y approaches.

You take your pick, pays your money and has your fun. The two mags though do seem to offer some advantage,at windy distances.Launch platforms vary in £,but all these can be had "factory" if needs must-or obviously customed as you wish.

Interesting thread.. Covered a few different areas along the way.

My opinion to your original question would be to go for the .300. Basically it will do everything that the .260 and .308 will do and cover you for those longer ranges when needed. It will just be noisier, more expensive and less pleasant to shoot.

Other suggestions i would have is to echo Dave with really asking yourself if its worth having a 1-mile gun for a few occasions a year.. I've been there and learned that its not worth it.

I would also suggest looking hard at reloading your own.. It really is the way forward for anyone who wants to shoot long range with any success and also to save a few pennies if you're putting a few rounds down range.

Also, 7-08 has been mentioned, been there, done that.. great round, nice to shoot BUT had transonic issues at 1000yds with similar parameters as gbal quotes (140gn VLD @ c.2800fps). What my opinion now is that you should pick the calibre around the weight of bullet you want to fire. ie maximising the BC. ie 6.5mm = 140gn 7mm = 180gn .308 = 210gn. Once you've figured that out, then decide how to launch it the fastest! Whether than means going for a wildcat or a magnum or whatever.. you decide.

If you're not interested in loading your own then its immaterial mentioning calibres that i'd be looking at. but FWIW. 6.5x284 (my go-to calibre for everything) or 7mm Practical.

Mac,should be just fine.I had a Rem VSSF 308 that shot some half moa groups at 1000y,in good conditions, more often 1moa,tad more...but was outclassed in wind by 300WM,just as the numbers say! And almost certainly much more so if we add a few hundred yards more range. Get your kicks, but enjoy!
