Chr15j
Well it's time to buy my .17 HMR now my variation is in. I already have a great 452 16" Varmint (which I love) so know they're good. I'm wandering what to get for the HMR though. I could get a used 452 (basically the same as my .22), get a 455 (but I've heard the quality isn't as good( or something else... I don't like the ruger 77/17 but I'm liking the savage, but having read a few USA forums they're not rated highly against the cz. Some practical advice would be helpful as well as anyone saying they have an unused .17 going for a song

tisme
I was in the same boat. I already had a CZ455 and CZ452. A Marlin 17hmr came up very cheap so I though I'd give it a go and I'm very pleased i did. First opinion was it looks a bit roughly built but when I shot it I was very pleasantly surprised. Might be worth a look at. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/xt/XT17.asp Just a thought.
Chr15j
I love the look of the savage but research has steered me away. Even the yanks don't rate them against cz and usually they rave about anything from over there!

craig
i wouldnt dismiss the savage 93 thumbhole stainless varmint, i went from a cz to the savage and preferred it in both looks and function , the accutrigger was very nice , laminate stock looked and felt right and the action was very smooth, the only gripe was the mag catch , worked perfect but looked wrong , i sold it for an annie 1517 , but only because the 1517 was a very good price otherwise i would still be happy with the savage craig

triggersqueezer
i have run anschutz, weirauch, and cz and they all shot groups that were depicted by ammo quality and not build quality.i now run a cz 455 and rate it.

craig
Hi Chr15j the accuracy was fine ( it had a 16" barrell ) as mentioned the only limiting factor is the ammo, had a few bad batches but the QC seems to be much better now from the makers , build quality was fine , the only gripe as mentioned was the mag catch but it worked faultlessly , just looked wrong , i honestly didnt see any better or worse in the build quality stakes between the two , both will outshoot and outlive you , Have a look at rimfirecentral.com , good site for all rimfire things and they do like their savages, i believe that most savages are shooters straight from the box , but then again if being honest most modern rimfire rifles are , dependant on factory ammo only being the weakest link

varmintexpress
I have a 16" 452 and its features and functionality are very good for the money. if I changed it it would be for a anni.like has been said the ammo is the weak link and if a good trigger kit is fitted the cz is a good allrounder. Chr15j
Well I have just fallen in love with a hw60 target stock with varmint barrel at a cool 795! Does anyone have any experience of these before I raid my children's piggybanks?
David Hancock
Oh you bad boy. I had a HW66 Jagd Match - check that out with a vented stock. Superb match trigger, fantastic balance standing, lovely bluing on the barrel, threaded but the bolt was akin to silk. Accuracy was .5 / .6 MOA with Winchester. The metal mag was a bonus - not a fan of plastic. Beware of the tight choke if you do get one I can PM you pics of mine if you wish.

Chr15j
Just done a deal on a lovely hw60 with 14" barrel, perfect bit of kit and very pleased! As I'm a newbie to HMR what zero range do you recommend? I want to use it as far as practical so looking for mpbr with a 1" variation up and down Thanks Chris
gbal
Just done a deal on a lovely hw60 with 14" barrel, perfect bit of kit and very pleased! As I'm a newbie to HMR what zero range do you recommend? I want to use it as far as practical so looking for mpbr with a 1" variation up and down Thanks Chris Here are your ballistics as a guide: (distance drop drift(10mph) in inches: 50 y +.2 .8 75 .3 1.8 100 0 3.3 125 -.9 5.3 150 -2.6 8 175 -5 11.3 Energy has dropped from muzzle 245 ftlb; to 100 136ftlb; to 175 84ftlb You might just about get a 125 zero, and keep bullet +/- an inch to 150,where wind is getting too much ( can't judge accurately enough) Which is about what this rf cartridge is realistically up to,with consistent ammo-not a given, alas, and in a good rifle (1 moa).Don't expect 100% hits at that distance, esp if there is wind. Chr15j
125 yard zero it is then then just judge the wind!
gbal
125 yard zero it is then then just judge the wind! OK-just try a few shots say at 75 to check-it can be hard to judge exactly one inch etc-given the likely spread of impacts-which will be about an inch anyhow....there is ultimately no substitute for actually firing/checking at known ranges.....for rifle/ammo/you.... Good luck with the wind! Gbal
jay666d
I’m probably a bit late to chip in on this post, but I have a Browning T-Bolt, 16 ½” barrel. When I 1st got it I thought, “Damn, its tiny!” But, y’know what? I Love It! A bonus is the 10 shot ‘double helix’ magazine with the spare one being kept in the butt! I’ve been having fun recently shooting a gong out at 375 yrds! (So satisfying to hear it ring out, although it means I can’t see what my overall grouping is!)
