ejg223
hi there all i have a wooden stock on my .222 rem zavodi and i would like to make a synthetic one for it i have all the time i need to make it but i dont really no where to start.any advice would be really helpfull i dont want to buy 1 i want to try and make it myself Now that's a quite a bit of work. Presuming you wont to make a laid up glas fibre stock you will need a mould. Your wooden stock will be the plug or prototype. You must first decide which way you want to split the mould, horizontal or vertical. Vertical (like mc millan) you would have to mill out the inlet. Horizontal is much more complicated but you could mould the inlet. Either way the two part mould cannot have negative angels to allow demoulding. Meaning you must find your split line on your plug and shape all angles positiv from there on. Finish your plug to a good standard and polish wax surface. Sink stock to the split line in a smooth surface and trim with kids play dough. Apply release agent and lay up first half of mould. Possibly with mould resin then reinforce with glass. Remove smooth surface after drying, remove kids dough, clean, apply release agent. Lay up second layer half of mould. Must run out of house. PM me if you need further info. edi
ejg223
Dan, my advice would be to forget about the full synthetic version. What are you trying to achieve? Weather proofing, greater stiffness, better fit, lighter? this can be achieved by coating your existing stock with glas or carbon and epoxy. Then paint it. In other words use your old stock as the core material. For coating awkward shapes such as stocks a tweed (koeper) woven glas or carbon fibre works well. edi

reloaderdan
well decided to start the stock just finished filling in all the chequering and then its the laborious task of sanding down and getting smooth again when thats done its going to be time to start the overlaying of the carbon fiber wiil take more pics and keep you all posted on its progress
ejg223
Dan, now would be the time to open the barrel chanel so that some reinforcement fibres can be added. You wouldn't believe how stiff one can make the front end of a flimsy hunter style stock. A good glass fibre and a bit of unidirectional carbon would be ok for the outside, all carbon is quite expensive and especially in the back area not needed. I did my one with cabon but it's a bit over the top. What resin will you be using? edi

That was the exit, was kind of leaning toward me thinking "out of range.." 155gr a-max is just right for them. edi
craigyboy
there cocky little buggers, they think when they are sitting at 200 yards they are safe. Round my way they find out most of the time they are not safe, though they are starting to get jumpy even at that distance, probably seen to many of there mates blown to bits beside them
