Squirrels.jpg

Last fall me and dad were out poppin squirrels, the grays were taken from 30 to 50 yrds out.

The fox(red) squirrel was taken at 120 yrds.

I was also able to break my red squirrel curse on that shot,For some reason or another...

I havent been able to shoot a fox squirrel..Saftey on,empty chamber,misjudge range,wind or

tree branch movement, bein spotted, losing sight of animal and just plain messin up the shot.

If you havent tried it,squirrel is some very good eatin..tho it takes a few to fill ya up.

How are you mate, you have no idea what you are saying there

just would like to point out to the lads in the UK that the red squirrel that you have isn't the same as the reds that they have, which are seriously protected.

Before anyone goes on about the killing of a red squirrel, and what a b*****d he is  If you look at it you can see the difference they are basically orange grey squirrels, but they are good eating as you say especialy in casseroles and even on the barbie.

You eat the lot or just the back legs.

Since I am here in the States...we do have differant rules.

And Thanx Smeagle for makin sure the differances of the squirrels were noted.

Didnt need to step in a pile sh+t.

Actually,

Here we have two kinds of red squirrels...The one I shot is the prefered one to eat.

The other is a pine squirrel...and isnt really that much bigger than a chipmunk

or gopher...and not very tasty from what I been told.Never tried them myself...

We use the term "red" and "fox" interchangably on squirrels, they are also quite

abit craftier then grey squirrels...Faster too.

Black squirrels here are considered a color phase of the grey squirrel.

Never shot one of those either...but they sure are pretty.

Glassed one last fall while watchin for deer.

Wanted to get back out and tag him, planned on havin him mounted.

Man,he was pretty.

We eat/cook up pretty much the whole thing...

Cut in sections,moistened/dipped in water or milk, then panfry to just browned

then covered and baked in the oven...ohhh so tasty.

Gettin Hungry just thinkin about them

While we are chatting I am down under in Australia. I am assuming you are on the Eastern side of the states with them there squirrels.

I have a couple of AR 10s and a M 14 as my work arms. Those Panther arms jobs that you guys get are pretty sweet, you have the heavy stainless barrel job.

Hi 308Panther, you are right about them being good eatin' but I must be honest I haven't had one in a lot of years. Folks here tend to think of them as a rat that climbs trees, so they are shot and left for the fox or maybe taken home for the ferrets. I have a few good frinds in the USA, I keep meaning to get them on here as they are all keen hunters, they enjoyed the lamping over here as they have never seen so many rabbits and of course you guys aren't alowed to use sub sonic ammo and sound moderators, these guys loved it. They would have had mine sent home with them if they could ;)

Hi guys: nice squirrels Pat they look good specimens.

Was trapping at the weekend and caught a trophy buck! He must've been in severe pain every time he climbed a tree as his nuts must've been dragging. That was one proud buck squiggle and the ladies must be missing him! He just wasn't equal to a Fenn No 4 though.

My way of cooking them is to double coat them in breadcrumbs/seasoned flour and to deep fry them.

Kentucky fried squirrel. Yum.

Doesn't work with old uns though they're best casseroled slowly.

I remember one of my old landladies looking at me aghast when I asked to use the kitchen and she relaised I wasn't joking when I said I was cooking squirrel stew.

I used the tails for a light pull in my room which kept her out of there for the duration.

You got any pics of the other native squirrels Pat?

Regards

Gareth

For this one me and my mate shot I think the .308 would be a bit on the light side, we used a 50bmg. Still plenty of Kentucky Fried Squirrel to go round.

Yeph It has been around a bit but I could not resist. :D

Seriously though, the ground I stalk on is dedicated red squirrel conservation woodland any greys have to be shot on sight, so I have got to tell my FLO that I need squirrels on my 270. If it is not safe to shoot them then we have to note there grid reference and inform our ranger and they will go and set traps.

The wife keeps asking if I have shot any as she saw somebody on TV cooking them and wants to give it a try.

I am actually in the central part ..other wise known as the Upper Midwestern state of

Wisconsin.and I hunt most of the state but these guys came from the westrn side of

Wisconsin.

The rifle used was my CZ 452 American in .17 HMR...Leupold scope

Good one,Bambi Basher,

Looks like ya got enought to feed the town, there.

If ya watched the skinnin vid, your gonna need the whole town to skin that one..

If I gotta use a .50 BMG to knock down a squirrel....I'm hangin my guns up.

Quite sure that wasnt a pet,3 days in the brush and you'ld be lookin a tad scruffy too..

You oughta see me after the 9 day deer hunt..

Right now its Turkey season...Hens on nest so we can only hunt the Toms,Jakes..

So Far all we seen were hens.

Well this grain thief would be a bit short of a good snack, but he has a new mouth and a new arseh%*e just above his tail. spotted him going for the grain in the hens tray and he stopped to look at me , caught a 38gr rf under his chin at 40 yds, all the grain he's taken he should weigh about a pound and a half!

P1010001.jpg

His tail will make a few flies though.

Shooting like that will definatley fix the bellyache he would get from overindulgin on the grain.

Squirrel tail, deer hair,Elk hair all tie real well...so does pheasant hackle.

I buy the ready mades myself...just attach and go.

Tryin to work up to the point of tyin my own flies...but only got so much time to do so much.
