Finally got her finished and assembled, in amongst other jobs. If i,m honest, i,ve bust my gut to get it ready for the Newark show, and i still have more guns to finish for it, but wanted to be certain of this one.

The rifle specs are as follows.

Truflite barrel finished at 25" and custom fluted. 18mm x 1.5 muzzle thread to accomodate Accuracy international muzzle brake.

Brugger and Thomet moderator on left hand thread.

Jewell trigger.

Nightforce nxs 5.5 - 22 x 50 in Badger rings.

AICS stock, action bedded into it.

I have enjoyed ever minute of building this rifle , and as its 0001 , its MINE........ :D

I think so John.

If you tighten up the front screw to 65 ins/lbs, then do the same to the rear, then slacken off the front one again, the action visibly rises out of the stock. That tells me its stressed. I have my own method of bedding it, but suffice it to say, mine dont move when either bolt is slackened.

Might make no difference at all, but as we all know, little things add up, and its also a mental thing too.

The fluting is a one-off Dave....never to be repeated. :D

I,ve never liked the idea of fluting a finished blank, but i took a leap of faith. It may bite me on the arse, who knows ? It is a heavy blank however, and the flutes aren,t deep.

I aim to try 139,s in it Garry, it has the legs over the 6.5 x 47 for them, and their BC kicks ass.

The fluting is done just to be different...i like to be different.....thats why i wear womens underwear.

Had you there.

No idea of the weight...its not light, but standers are perfectly feasible.

I,m sharing a stand with Roger at SYSS. I,m not a show kind of guy, but this year it has a specialist rifle section, so we thought we would give it a go, as we aren,t being lumped in with the shotgun/gundog/barbour crowd.

Today has been a perfect day. :D

I screwed up yesterday by coming home from the shop without any powder, or 139 scenar,s.

So it was into the loft to see what was there. Bugger all basically. I found a quarter pound of vhit 150, which was all i could find data for with a 123 grain scenar, which wasn,t going to be my bullet of choice. Anyway, i loaded 20 rounds up at the recommended starting load charge, which is something i never do.

Late to the bloody range, and so was my mate ! :D

Anyway, we put a target up at 100 and got the stick out.

I decided to "guinea pig " this barrel, and give it a baptism of fire. I had cleaned the bore last night after what i would imagine would be one, probarbly two, proof rounds. No copper came out. :o I,ve always been a devotee of a break in procedure. Not needed on a barrel of this quality. The borescope showed nothing in the throat after shooting.

Onto the bench, brand new barrel, and action....and cold. I fired 5 rounds. The group is the bottom one on the card.

I then shot the middle group . Then i let my buddy have 5 shots on another target, and he shot similar.

I then shot the last group as we were due on range. The heat haze off the mod made it very difficult, and it is slightly bigger than the others.

Quite honestly, i was astounded. The gun feels different to any i own , and shoots beautifully . Its slick, and recoil is very mild with the mod on. Either i have dropped on a pretty good bullet initially, or better may come with some load development. I really want to shoot the heavier bullets.

I then went on to win the comp with the 6.5 x 47. :D

I,ve just cleaned the barrel. I swabbed the carbon out with KG, then soaked the bore in sweets for 15 minutes. Here,s what came out.

100.jpg

First two patches are wet with sweets, the right hand patch is the first out after soaking. There is the tiniest trace of copper on all three.

I,ve never owned a barrel that fouls so lightly , and only re-enforces my belief that Truflite are probarbly one of the very best barrels made.

I,m fairly certain this gun will take over as my main comp weapon this season, and i expect great things from it.

Sometimes things DO go right . :D

Baldie,

have you tried loosening your suspender belt, the groups may tighten up!

Seriously though, looks very promising.

The suzzies were fine, it was the bloody G string that made me wriggle......

I have no doubt that this will be typical of most rifles. Very few shoot well with a starting load, which is what these were, and i think vv 150 is too fast for a .260 with heavy bullets. I,m gonna get a tub of 560 and some 139 scenars.

I can confirm that Dave's rifle looked as nice 'in the flesh' as it does in the pics.

Try some slower powder but I'm using N550 in my 260 and so is Paul. Have a read of Chris Parkin's article on developing a load for his 260 in Target Shooter a few issues ago - remember - he won the Fly Shoot with it!!

Well shot in the tactical comp. - a one shot hit on a 4 inch plate at 600 yds is good by anyone's standard.

Cheeers

Thanks for the kind words Vince, we had a good day yesterday, didn,t we ? :)

I couldn,t remember what you said you were using, 550 it is then. I,ll get a tub this week and give it a go. I will also dig out Chris,s article, after all, his barrel was cut with the same reamer, so it cant be a bad starting point.
