  1. I use 6.5gn of Red Dot with a 240gn RNFP lead bullet in my Marlin. Been using that fo a few years and it works well for me.
  2. Hearing is the more important sense for locating prey for the Barn Owl and many other owl species too. They can catch prey under thick, rank grass (one of the best habitats for them) in pitch darkness, by listening to the movement of their prey. When they fledge, their ability to hunt by sound isn't so great - they have to learn how to do it and 'calibrate' their ears. Many (perhaps most) owl species have asymetric ear positioning which helps them with accuracy and precision.
  3. There's no ban on brakes at Monmouth - it's down to the RCO's discretion but we try do to squad people so that people with brakes shoot with others using them or with people who aren't bothered by them. Sure, those brakes don't make things any louder but they do direct the sound sideways, as mentioned above which, in a relatively narrow, accoustically hard tunnel, results in it being much louder at the firing point. I have shot my .338LM in there with a brake.....it's dramatic.
  4. Thank you for your kind words about the RCO team. We do our best. I can't claim any personal credit though because I've hardly done anyhting this year for various reasons but hopefully, that will change as my summer work season comes to a close. Adam is a star, he really is. He's a real mover and shaker in the village community too. He's just one of those people who makes things happen. Don't tell him I said that though - we'll never get his head through the door. I've known him for a long time - I'm not quite in the same village as he is but the village pub, when it was open at least, was the only one I could walk to and it's a short crawl from his door. I've had a number of RR and Discoverys over the years but that was mostly in the days when I was taking the corporate shilling and someone else was picking up the maintenance bills 🙂 I run my own small business now and sold olf my 2016 RR Sport earlier this year so my business fleet with be the Defender and a new Transit Custom Trail which is, apparently, being delivered tomorrow. I won't be there on Saturday I'm afraid. I'm heading up to Callow End, attending a small blues festival for the weekend. It will be my first music festival in almost two years and I am really looking forward to it.
  5. Sorry for the late reply - I missed this. I've had my Defender for five years now and not had a single issue with it thus far - apart from where a rat decided to chew through a moulded fitting on the plastic fuel taknk. That was a pain but I can't blame Land Rover for that!! Yes, I'm still a member of MDRC - it's my main club and Adam, the Membership Secretary is a veyr good mate of mine and I'm one of the RCOs there too so I'm sure we'll bump into each other sooner or later.
  6. JM Wasn't the reason why I asked to see the accounts. I never believed for one moment he'd been doing anythign untoward. My request was some time after he departed. There's been a lot of subscription income gone in since he went and very little shooting. I'd quite like to know what's happened to it, as some of it was mine!. BTW, are you the chap that sold my mate Jamie the Discovery?
  7. I was a member of Monmouth and District RC before I joined ODRC. I liked John. Sure, he was usually late for shoots bu he was friendly, welcoming and courteous. Then things changed. When all these rumours and accusations about JM kicked off, I wrote to the treasurer, as a member, asking for a copy of the accounts. I did this twice but never got a reply. What's happened is a great shame because I used to realy enjoy my dsys out with ODRC. Among other things, I'd like to know what's happened to the money both before and after JM left.
  8. Well done. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun.
  9. I'll take this if it's still going. Have sent you a PM too. No problem to collect.
  10. Personally, I couldn't give a monkeys about what people have to do thse days to get a licence. That I did a full wrtten exam and, later, a Morse test encoiraged me to study and learn. Constantly bashing those who come into the hobby via a different route seems to be all that keeps some older hams motivated these days. I've had issues with planners over the years and also had a few long peroids when, thanks to work mostly, I wasn't able to be very active but I find myself still as enthusiastic about the hobby as I was 45-odd years ago, when I first discrovered it. There's always something new to try, be it some new opering mode or new technology. If it hooks you, you, it's a great hobby that can be enjoyed well into old age, with a few additional aids - such as the four electric winches I have here to install on my two mobile towers. I'm getting too old to keep cranking them up and down by hand now!!
  11. I was 11 when I first discovered amateur radio. I found it pretty intimidating too at the start and I didn't have the internet to be able to instantly look up stuff I didn't understand. I can remember well going for months sometimes not having a clue about some term or other I'd hear on the air before I'd finally work it out. I think a large part of my interest was in the challenge of learning - I'm pretty much still the same now.....still learning!
  12. As the chaps said, the CW (Morse) requirement went a long time back - well over ten years. I've been a radio ham since 1978 and started listening on the bands at least fice years before that. It's a great hobby. It was an interest I first encountered whilst still at school and was entirely responsible for my becoming an electronics engineer and for my 25 year career in the technology sector. I'm still active, although not as active as I'd like to be thanks to running a busy business.
  13. Ham radio doesn't have to be expensive and eight year olds frequently pass the exams these days so they can't be that hard. Higher power and a considerably wider range of available frequencies means that ham radio has a significantly greater probability of success in an emergency situation when compared to CB.
  14. Last week, I had a PM, responding to my 'wanted' post on here, seeking a K98. It was someone using the handle 'Willon' on this board. He told me his mate Frank, in Manchester, had one for sale. He gave me Frank's email - donfranky546@gmail.com. I emailed 'Frank', The reply, which was written in passable language, was signed 'Don'. He sent me some pics of the rifle. When I looked closely at the pics, I was sure that some backgrounds hand been altered. I did a search on the serial No and 'Mauser' and it came up as an auction-house sale in the USA. All the pics that Don had sent me were there - but yes, the background had be altered in the versions I was sent. Another email from Don, sayng he could ship the rilfe for £1,550, 'priority mail'. I told him I have upcoming business in Manchester and would calll in to view and collect. That was the last I heard of him. Last night, I challenged Willon on this board by PM.....I see this morning he has either vanished from here or has perhaps just blocked me. Either way he/she/it are clearly scammers. I investigated 'Frank' a little further. He's used that email address on a couple of shooting related boards in the USA, claiming to be in Florida a week or so ago. Investigating the IP address associated with that email address suggests he's more likely to be in Washington state. HIs IP address appears to be associated with SPAM on various, mostly US-based boards. I did message admin on here but thought it worth letting everyone know that these assholes are among us.
  15. I'll take the Lyman rings if they're still available please.
  16. Thanks, guys. My missus is home now. Not 100% bt well on the way. Only problem I've had with RS80 is that it's the only powder I've tried, thius farr, which doesn't flow well in my autothrow. I've got a few suggestions I'm going to trym next time I load some. Other than that, I find it's great and I use RS powders for pretty much eveyrthing with the exception of my .44 these days.
  17. Apologies for the late return to commenting on this thread - my wife has been unwell and in hospital. On the mend now, I'm pleased to say. I've had no pressre signs at all with my 98grn of RS80 behind a 300grn Berger bullet. I will admit, I've not not shot it that much, thanks to other issues getting in the way but the 130 rounds I've put through it thus far have worked as well as I was hoping.
  18. I've been using 98grn of RS80 with a 300grn Berger bullet. I find this works well in my 32" barrel.
  19. Thanks guys. I've taken a look at Google Calendar and, as Pops and Catch suggested, it looks like it will do the job and plenty more. I don't think we need anything as complex as the kinds of systems that Bisley and SSC are using. All that's needed now is to convince a dinosaur or two that this is the way to go. That may be a little more challenging! Again, thank you for all the suggestions.
