  1. Thanks for all the great advice folks, I think that pretty much nails it down! Lucky I asked, I was moments away from ordering a few hundred 2156s..... The relative stability through the transonic zone is music to my ears. The only load I've used beyond 600 yards has been using SSTs which were entirely consistent (compared to performance closer in) at just over 800 yards but beyond 1000 the group size was suddenly huge, which I guess was instability during the transonic phase? They were theoretically going subsonic at 1040 yards and at the time I didn't realise that this wasn't a "line in the sand"... It's a steep learning curve but I'm loving every second and I'd be nowhere without UKV
  2. Brillo! Oh no! Now i'm really stuck... The only thing keeping me off the Berger was the price, it will add £30-40 potentially to a full day of shooting, and I figured if people were winning competitions with the Sierra they must be ok! Don't forget though, I'm not looking for competition levels of performance, that's simply unreasonable given the rifle, while no longer in a playdough stock, is still a standard factory action and barrel with a rifle basix trigger. How much variation were you actually measuring (weight and base to ogive)? That info will help me decide, given I know the achievable performance of the rifle with a number of other loads I've developed with a variety of bullets that I've used over the last 4 years in this rifle, with the data I kept useful for comparison with your figures. I have developed a load using the Sierra match kings with Lapua brass in an identical Howa set up in .223 calibre with fantastic results, albeit with significant sensitivity to seating depth, but as long as I make sure every round is produced indentically to within the tolerences of my equipment I can achieve just over 1/3 moa out to 300 yards. If I could get that level of performance from the 308 I'd be thrilled.
  3. Thanks gbal, by "standard" do you mean the original S2155 version? I know the naming gets confusing because the word "Palma" has been dropped off that particular bullet now the S2156 is available.... Don't want to misunderstand and order the wrong thing!
  4. Just thought of another question I forgot to ask... Is it worth me looking at Lapua Palma cases in preference to the standard Lapua cases I use at the moment? Will the potential improvement in SD from the small primers be noticeable in a rifle as humble as mine, or is it going to be lost in the noise?
  5. Hi folks, I'd appreciate any advice you have regarding choice of bullet for long range results in a factory Howa 1500 .308 barrel. I'm basically down to a choice of Sierra bullets, because Berger is too pricey and I can't use Scenars where I shoot due to the damage they do to the steels. I have drifted towards the 155gr choices having originally looked at the 175gr. I was looking at the Sierra 2156 Palma Match, because of the incredible BC, but I heard somewhere that they can be fickle in factory chambers, so would you think I would be wiser to look at the old 2155? The usual maximum range I will be shooting at will be around 600 yards, but occasionally I get the opportunity to move out to anywhere up to 1300. I was (over simplistically as I now realize) just looking for a nominal 1000 yard load that was above mach 1, but as both bullets will be transonic well before that I guess the goalposts have just been widened... I was previously using PPU 168gr match bullets with satisfactory results (5/8moa), at least out to 500 yards, but in order to get them working well I had to send them at a very low velocity (2300) which means they are obviously not great as the range increases. I use Hornady 150gr SST as my deer load, giving 3/4moa at 2840fps, so I'm reasonably confident that the need to load light was a peculiarity of the PPU 168gr with my particular rifle. I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me that would allow me to extract the best performance from the Howa up to the 1000 yard mark. I appreciate it is never going to be competition standard but that's not the objective, just to maximise what I have. Cheers, Mick
