Wild justice threat to game shooting

Except his campaign isn't really to conserve wildlife. His attacks on grouse moors ignores the fact (and there is adequate research to back it up) that grouse moors provide the best habitats for waders and other ground nesting birds and yes hen harriers are ground nesting birds and it is the grouse shooting which pays for this habitat. The RSPB has two grousemoors which are allowed to run wild and they don't have any successful hen harrier nests on them because of the predation. Also buried in the RSPB reports it is shown that they were more than happy to use the general licenses to control predation on their reserves. CP makes huge amounts of money running wildlife watching safaris in remote parts of the world which burn huge amounts of fuel and produce equally huge amounts of carbon dioxide but he sits supporting Extinction Rebellion! David.
  3. Hi Guys, Thanks for your replies and pic. Great advice. Bolt and semi would be nice, if money was no problem. Which moderator have you fitted?. Did you both test a lot of ammo before finding the best one that suited the rifle/ thanks

As a TV celebrity/presenter or whatever, I find Packham intensely irritating, but I agree 100% with his campaign to conserve native wildlife. Pete

I think you are wrong regarding Packham's motives - I don't agree with him but I do think he has some points we should address. I hope I made my thoughts clear earlier. It's not 'virtue signalling' to flag up a disagreement on understanding on risk and tactics so clearly you weren't referring to me. I am a target shooter, that's all I'm active in but I do support hunters rights - but never unconditionally.

I am pretty certain that the reference to Colonel faw faw was a a slight on the general attitude of the NRA at the time being only interested in single shot target rifles and their like.....an attitude in some quarters that still exists to this day. There were an awful lot of us that protested in a multitude of ways when faces with the bans on S/auto rifles and handguns bans that also cost myself much of my competitive ambitions . Unlike some I respect the rights of others to enjoy shooting activities within the law whether I necessarily agree or not. I am not a regular devotee of field sports only shooting the occasional deer for the table but I do recognise the thin end of the wedge school of thought and believe it to be a valid argument . That being evidence based on being a certificate holder for over 40 years and witness to that which we have lost in that period . Packham and co will not desist whilst they are getting both the funding they receive and the attention they crave. One thing that never seems to change however is the virtue signalling by certain people who believe their form of shooting is the only acceptable shooting activity and anything else to be held up as a sacrificial lamb when the ban it brigade knock on our door

Definitely agree with the above........got to be marginal on rats at 100yds. If you're static with a great rest and solid comfortable position then give it a go, but if you're wandering around or shooting out of, or off the bonnet of a vehicle, then too many variables at 100 yds with the semi auto........probably marginal IMO with a 22lr of any flavour. Regards, Rob.

    VOLQUARTSEN/ RIMFIRE MAGIC 10\22

If I can recall it’s around a 1” group at 75yards. But obviously that’s only using CCI non match ammo. Trouble is any wind and or the extreme spread of rimfire ammo something can go amiss fairly easily. Magpul / volquartsen is a great combo indeed. Being light, semi auto & accurate makes it a great tool. I just run a red dot sight on mine now. My thoughts are if the main use is around 50 yards with occasional stretching out to 100yards you can’t go wrong with the Rimfire Magic. If your consistently shooting at 100yards and require the best accuracy for the small kill zone that is a rat you might be better off with the bolt action. My vote..... have both semi & bolt action!

I hear what you say, but unlike Packham, I don't have a bully pulpit with an audience of millions. Nor do I have a hypocritical employer like the BBC, to whom Packham is an "employee" when he just shows piccies of cute animals, yet only a "contractor" when says something anti-field sports (with which the BBC agrees anyway...). I was active throughout both the SLR and pistol campaigns, writing to MPs, media and local papers. The efficacy of that is reflected in the contents of my gun cabinet. Now I just pay my money to shooting organisations, who have access to policy-makers which I could never dream of. Never, never, never imagine that the ultimate aim of all the thousands of Packhams out there is anything other than a total ban on field sports and gun ownership. Every change in the law is a ratchet: it only goes one way. maximus otter

Maximus, I understand your "thin end of the wedge" argument but it's an ineffective strategy. I happen to think it's mistaken too but I do understand where you're coming from. With regard to joining organisations, well done but how active are you personally within those organisations in support of your sport? All I'm trying to say is being organised and addressing the facts is at least a little effective, moaning on a forum isn't. With regard to invective and personal attacks what do you call "Colonel Faw Faw" and your attacks on Packham's activities which imply he hypocritically acts in bad faith? Would it not be a better strategy to rebut Packham's arguments rather than attack him? He's well regarded by millions so that's not going to win them over where as, a well argued and presented alternative to his world-view may at least sway some to your side. He's not the enemy, if he ceased action tomorrow the anti-brigade would still exist. Does shooting sport have a celebrity advocate? It would be useful (deplorable we've sunk this far but it's a fact celebrities do influence). As I posted earlier, democracy stinks when your on the minority side doesn't it😉
  15. Hi Rob, Thanks for your reply. So you think its good for rats out to 100yards? I know the accuracy of the cz 455 is well known, although you don't see much about 10/22 accuracy at 100. The benefits of a quick follow up shot with a semi auto appeals to me although i don't want to buy one and be disappointed that it doesn't do the job i need it to do. Bolts are generally more accurate and less ammo fussy. The rimfire magic , Magpul stock and volquartsen barrel does look like a neat combination.
  16. Hi Marky Thanks for your reply. I am making a decision in the next couple of days. What accuracy do you get at 75yards?

    1. After several Firearms Acts, all of which impacted negatively on both me the shooting sports in general, I think I can evidence my "thin edge of the wedge" attitude. 2. Thanks for the advice: I'll join some shooting organisations which will support me. Oh, wait! I've already been a member for years... 3. Perhaps you could point out the "invective and personal attacks" which I have posted, so that I can edit them? maximus otter

Pompous, moi? well at least we've got a discussion going, makes a change from endless adverts of stuff for sale 😁 Some of you want this forum to be an echo-chamber of your beliefs - tough luck. Thankfully there's some skeptical thinking on here by more than a few. Re Maximus Otter: again with this "thin end of the wedge" argument.. Stop bleating about how you were let down by the NRA etc etc and get organised if you want to effectively resist. Take a leaf out of the FCSA 50Cal approach, they were successful in their excellent defence of their sport in the face of doom sayers. Lobby and present a sensible rebuttal to the opposition and stop personal attacks. It's a harder route and not so self satisfying as invective and personal attacks echoed by fellow travellers.

Mr Peckham (IMHO) is the very best example of a modern snake oil salesman ! There is an element of truth in what he says, said with passion and conviction in order to gain the following of the slightly gullible who can't or won't be ar@@d to find the truth for themselves. When they are asked/implored to put their hands in their pockets, they do so because they are following a believable leader who embodies a worthwhile cause.........sounds a bit cultish doesn't it ? Much like the charismatic religious leaders, etc Mr Peckham has no problem with using his position of influence to amass a personal fortune in the region of £5million............all in the interests of conservation you understand ! Regards, Rob.

    VOLQUARTSEN/ RIMFIRE MAGIC 10\22

I had one of these and used it regularly for ratting and rabbiting. I think it was the 16" carbon barrel version and was very accurate with most ammunition, best being Eley I seem to remember.....it would shoot 1" groups at 100yds if I concentrated and did my bit but average was around 1.5-2.0". I don't have it any more as I don't have the time to use it, I remember it would feed well with the 10 round mags but struggled with the larger 30 round mags.....I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, but the usual caveats apply if buying secondhand..........enjoy ! Regards, Rob.

My evidence? How about my semi-auto centrefire rifle? Seized and melted because shooters didn't "hang together", and "Colonel Faw-Faw of the NRA" was delighted to tell the BBC that no-one needed a self-loader in the UK. How about my pistols, and my chance to make the team and shoot for Scotland? Seized and melted because we didn't have a united, well-organised front to take on the antis. Packham doesn't want publicity? Perhaps he shouldn't make incendiary comments about allowing the giant panda - the very symbol of conservation - to become extinct. You might want to discuss how shy and retiring Packham is on his website www dot chrispackham dot co dot uk. Unfortunately, you've missed the chance to pay him several thousand pounds to explore the Antarctic with him on a centrally-heated luxury liner; also a similar trip to Alaska. Bird-watching? You could have paid him several thousand pounds to visit the Gambia (2018) or Kenya (2019) You can, however, still see him at several live talks in the UK later this year (best seats £84). If only he weren't so shy and retiring, eh? maximus otter
