What's peoples experience with the likes of 80 and 75 grain Amax bullets in .224 calibre with regards to expansion on vermin.

I know there is lots of talk about Amax bullets being for target use and on the flip side I hear they are identical to Vmax bullets and its the wording on a box that is different.

However all the debate on this put aside, what is peoples experiences on the Amax only the likes of the 75/80 grain bullet expanding on vermin and on deer ( where it is legal to use them etc)

Thanks in advance.

My experience is that Amax expand rapidly on impact. Just like vmax do......

TMK has a bigger ballistic tip and is even more expandy, if not downright explosive.

From left to right, in .264/6.5 - 123gr Nosler Customer Comp, 139gr Lapua Scenar, 140gr Berger VLD Target, 140gr Berger VLD Hunting, 140gr Amax, 130gr TMK, 129gr Hornady Interlock, and 95gr Vmax.

Ive shot the 80 Amax for a few years now. Ive shot rabbits out to 800 yards and a unknowingly amount around 500-600.

I opend a new batch of 80's recently and and i have had 2 rabbits run off and they were shot at 250 and 260 yards!. They were without doubt a hit as I had the video camera running and watching the slow mo you can see the impact. On monday also shot some rabbits 1x at 354 yards and 1x at 550 yards and they both looked like the had stood on a land mine, without doubt bullet expantion occoured. I still managed to pick up the copper jacket lodged in the ground behind the rabbit.

Just wondering if this is just a couple of unlucky shots that never conected with bone to cause rapid expantion and perhapswas a stright in and out gut shot etc?

Very interesting to see the x-sections, thanks for posting. Yes, at closer range especially, where velocities are still pretty high,I've found the TMKs to be downright explosive too. There's generally not much left of anything shot with 69 or 77gr TMKs from the 223! Makes them a really useful LR vermin control bullet. I'd hesitate using them for rabbits as there'd not be much left for the pot!

Sorry for being a little off the original topic but anyone know howmuch difference is there between the 123 Amax and the 123 sst ?

Was wondering as with the Amax going of production when I've used my stash up I'll need to find a new bullet

Thanks

James

I would be interested in this too as I was looking at SST in .308 recently.

And then there is the new ELD range, Anyone have any experience with these in .224 cal?

I have heard they are very explosive?

Problem is I have approx 2000 of the original 80 Grain Amax so don't really want to by more of the ELD range etc.

Anyone else with experience on the 75/80 Amax, and had anyone got any experience on deer or deer sized animals etc

Cheers
