HME - High Muzzle Energy Question

A quick* question

 

What is the definition of HME and is this definition consistent across UK ranges?

 

I have this from Bisley - I suspect that I am being a bit dim here but this is not the sort of stuff to allow a lazy misinterpretation - why do they specify 4500J as the max for rifle ranges and yet allow HME rifles up to 7000J?

 

My general take was 300 win mag type rifles were Ok but 338 lap was out - is this broadly correct?

 

I have opened up a muzzle energy calculator on another page and 230 Berger going at 2850 gives a ME of 5625J - so well into HME territory - can these be used at Bisley - not clear below - an if so which ranges?

1. No firearm and ammunition combination which develops a muzzle energy exceeding 7000 J (5160 ft

   lb) may be used on any of the Bisley ranges without the specific permission of the CE which must be sought in writing well in advance of the planned use. The following limits apply:

   1. i for Rifle ranges, no specific calibre limitation but:
      a maximum muzzle velocity of 1000 m/s (3280 ft/s) and a maximum muzzle energy of 4500 J (3319 ft lb);

   2. ii for Gallery Rifle and Pistol ranges, no specific calibre limitation but: a maximum muzzle velocity of 655 m/s (2150 ft/s) and
      a maximum muzzle energy of 2030 J (1496 ft lb).

   3. iii for High Muzzle Energy (HME) firearms (see sub-para g below) the limits are:
      a maximum muzzle velocity of 1000 m/s (3280 ft/s) and
      a maximum muzzle energy of 7000 J (5160 ft lb);
      In this case, special zeroing procedures are required

up to 4500j shoot away

 

between 4500j and 7000j you need to do a special zero procedure and get it signed off by a HME qualified RCO , this needs to be done every morning before you shoot even if you were shooting on Saturday and want to shoot sunday , this is how it used to be but it may have changed and frankly it needs to if it hasn't because its crazy.

oh , and I think if I recall correctly the 338 lapua was specifically banned to civilian use on gallery ranges , but military units could still use it obvs

 

this is the reason I sold my 338 lap and had a 300rum built !

Thank you very much - very helpful - based on the calculator I am using it looks as though with the most 300 mags and indeed a lot of 7mm mags you will be over 4500J - how much hassle is the sign off?

 

This must be a pain for the F-Class guys - do they really do this each visit to Bisley? - I am sure I have seen people using 300 win mags and 300 wsms on short siberia for example

yes you can use 300's etc at Bisley, just do the HME test, its just a reduced HME target,

 

but HME is becoming a issue with small local clubs without doubt!

The zeroing procedures have changed a little, it's now easier to use a HME at 200m or less.
