Scotch_egg
I'm having a bit of a rough time getting a load sorted for one of my rifles. As it is a stalking rifle I went with a standard Redding die set with the simple plan to load factory OAL. As with most best laid plans it hasn't worked, saying that I have been lucky with a couple of other rifles. So I will need to start on the seating depth adjustments. I'm looking for experience of the redding micro top you add to a standard die. Good or bad? It's either use the redding add on or swap to forster micro seater because the price is easier to swallow and I'm happy with the quality of a set in a different calibre I have. Also if any one has a second hand one for sale or a shop with one in stock that would be a starter for 10. No use asking about something that I cannot get hold of. Grum87
I added the micrometer adjustable bit to my Redding 260 seating die, works great. I believe they are available in a couple of different shapes per calibre, to suit normal boolits and big pointy VLD types. Whatever style you get can be shaped to suit a specific bullet if you find it leaves marks on bullets. Never had an issue with them in sane calibres, my .338 seating die left marks on bullets however, but with a little bore polishing compound you can lap the seater to the perfect shape using a bullet. What I would say though, is it won't seat bullets any differently than the die already does, it just makes tweaking and adjusting much easier/quicker. Scotch_egg
Thanks Grum, end of your last sentence is what I was looking for. I need to tweeek the seating depth to pull in the groups. Well that's the new plan. Where did you buy yours from?
maximus otter
Where did you buy yours from? I picked up a .260 recently for £34.50 from 1967 Spud: https://www.1967spud.com/shop/redding/redding-seating-micrometer-plugs-for-berger-vld-bullets/ maximus otter

Big Al
I have them, they are useful but by no means vital. Your regular means of adjustment works perfectly well and can get you repeatability to within tolerances that become irrelevant to seating depth adjustments. Why not just use what you have? Scotch_egg
I want to be able to adjust the seating depth precisely and not just quater of a turn.
Big Al
I want to be able to adjust the seating depth precisely and not just quater of a turn. Cant you do smaller turns then? I say this because dialling in a 5 thou adjustment doesn't always mean you will get it. I like micrometer dies to make getting big adjustments close but once you are down to 5 thou or less I dont think they have much if any advantage over conventional. The quality and rigidity of the press seems to make quite a difference along with neck tension when looking to adjust a thou at a time, my Co-Ax is much better than other presses Ive had for that.
