Hobbit Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Hi I have a question about body sizing belted magnums - on a previous thread I was asking about the multi calibre potential of the AI AXMC and we diverged into reloading the 300 win mag and the implications of the belt - I did not want to continue that thread as it is not in hand loading and Duey said "The only issue with reloading the 300 win mag is that resizing dies never reach the area just above the belt and eventually it grows enough to make the bolt tight A company in the states makes a collet die that overcomes this issue, Innovative Technologies, and it works really well Think mine cost about £120 by the time it got through customs etc Also if loaded hard you will blow the primer pockets very quickly, I get about 6 - 7 reloads before the pockets show signs with my reloads" I have read the website - http://www.larrywillis.com seems to make sense - does this mean that the body die in a redding match or competition die set would not do the same? terryh Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Frodo When I had a 300WM in an AI AWM I used one of those Innovative Tech. collet dies and it worked very well. You do not need to use it every time as the other end of the collet is a gauge so you drop your fired case into it and it gives you an idea of any bulge near the belt. I simply ignored the belted bit when reloading and sized off the shoulder for ref. As to loads from memory I was then using R19 under 190 SMK's but had great results with the Berger 210s but cannot remember which powder this was with. There is probably a slew of better bullets and data noe as this was 10 years ago? Think I'd try to get hold of some of the Flatline bullets for real distance with the 300WM? Incisor Posted June 23, 2017 Report Share Posted June 23, 2017 Had some Lapua that was ok but hard to find as don't think in current production. Tried RWS and that was awful and despite best efforts and many hours of work just could get a decent load tuned. I'm currently trying a batch of 50 Hornaday, but needed a fair bit of prepping as the necks were very varied and the primer pockets were also inconsistent, big advantage was about £50 for 50, Norma are running at about £130 per 100 I will be returning to Norma but to be honest the hornaday will probably see me through the last of the barrel life as it's running at 2100ish round count now I've also just changed over to H1000 powder behind the 200gr SMK and found elevation inconsistencies improved dramatically at 1200yds Also I believe that the modern sammi spec chambers for the 300 winmag now headspace off the shoulder and not off the belt, but I may have misheard this one Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

.300wm Posted June 24, 2017 Report Share Posted June 24, 2017 I always found that Norma brass showed pressure signs much earlier than any others that I have used in the past, several grains of difference.
