Looks like Im going to be close to the wire with weight with my new rifle

What sort of weight loss will there be in chambering and crowning a barrel? Its 3.8kg now but dont really want to loose length

Are you profiling the barrel or shortening it in any way?

The material you remove to cut the tenon and chamber will barely make 2oz, a skim on the crown nothing.

No just weighed it as it stands

Whoever does your barrel will most likely remove an inch from the muzzle so that will save you 100g, by the time you chamber it you will almost be there, ideally about 1.25" will get you were you need to be.

You should be able to ask the person chambering your barrel to make it the weight you want surely?

Sometimes bedding is only 20 grams. Depends on how it is done.

I think one looses weight the easiest on the stock. I would hold onto the barrel length profile until all other options are used up.

How heavy is your stock?

What is it made of?

For me, an FTR rifle build usually works like this:

Action 2.1 lbs (Stolle F Class)

Barrel 8lbs (30inch taper 1.25 to 1 inch)

Scope 1.5lbs (March)

Rings, trigger, guard, screws etc. 1lb

Bi-pod 1lb (SEB Joy-pod)

Stock 4.5 lbs

If you use a 3lb action like a Barnard, then something has to give.

Suggest you either use a lighter barrel profile (Palma is a lighter alternative to F Class and still very stiff)

Or

Opt for different stock / lighter scope

Thanks Vince. That's a bit different to what I had. I'm a metric man so:

Action 1

Barrel 3.8

Stock 2.2

Bipod 0.53

Rings 0.15

Scope 0.7

Total 8.38

You're only about 5oz over-weight. A SEB joypod, some light rings and you're there. Don't sacrifice the barrel!
