I was looking for some advice and if you haven't got anything constructive to say don't say it.

Said plenty of constructive stuff about real world 22lr performance, expectation management against that reality, and rifles that sound to be achieving it, but you don't want to listen :)

Eley have just made available their extensive firing data on 22 ammo.

Broad findings are that 50 yard 50 shot batch samples come in around 1 inch edge to edge ( about .8 centre to centre).

That translates to well over 1.5 inches by 100yards (1.6 but it's more as group size is a function of time of flight, not distance, and they slow down...let alone other dispersers....).

There are some batch differences,as serious 22 match shooters know.

Accurate shooter field testing found that field results struggled to get close to match test barrrel lab condition results (no real surprise) and there was variation even between same make barrels....as well as rifle/ammo preferences.

Bottom line, this extensive data base does not support 1moa precision/accuracy in field 22rfs at 100y,even with Eley ammo, which is consistently among the best in other comparison testing.

Great info.

(George, are you ok? That seems uncharacteristically concise for you! :) )

Ha ha...trying a new tack-temporarily-just whet the appetite, and allow the interested to search out the references given. It was called 'research' in my former life, easy for the writer, as the last (one) line® is necessary and sufficient.End of.

Not popular with students,though.

Great information - Now wouldn't it be good to see other manufacturers publish their results - These would need to be some sort of independent standard figures so they can be compared like-for-like.

So - I have seen old catalogues and adverts from way back (1920's) where BSA state that all target rifle barrels are tested and required to produce 10 shot 1" groups at 100yds - This was way before any "advertising standards" so was this just BS.

Well, yes,it would be -if it's apples to apples....***

Note three key descriptors here:

Martini International MK 11

Machine Rest

Special Match Ammunition

But it establishes the ammunition's intrinsic precision

So would be good comparative data.

Though not necessarily minute of rabbit cranium,in a super sport 5,in the fields with me shooting. :-)

***which quoted BCs were not recently in some cf bullets....til the Litz blitz
