Tight round causing flier

Hi,

I have recently passed my DSC1, where I was required to shoot 6 shots into a Roe kill zone at 100m prone, 70 kneeing ( I stood of quad sticks) and 40 standing. Before I shot at the Roe target I had to put 3 shots into a 4" inch circle, which I passed very easily. I then moved onto the Roe target, I chambered my .243 95 SST ( home load) which felt a little more stiff than usual. I didn't think anything of it and proceeded to shoot my first round. It went 3" right and 3.5" left of my point of aim! I won't repeat what I said but I wasn't best pleased. I chambered the next round and it hit exactly where I was aiming.

I then proceeded to shoot the next 4 shots which produced about an 1" group with one huge flier (please see attached photo). I wasn't the only person that experience a flier from a flier due to a tight round but his was from factory ammo!

I know that improper resizing on the cases causes the round to be tight but non of the same batch were anywhere near as tight, what can be done to stop this? Does age of brass have anything to do with it? And can anyone explain why a tight round causes a flier??

Thanks in advance

Austin

An interesting story. I suggest you sample your remaining rounds and conduct a blind test - ie get a known good shot to shoot your rifle and chamber the rounds one at a time for him so he is unaware of the stiff bolt closing.

Then review the results.

Good luck.
