Drivinfish
Putting this out there as I'm trying to come up with but can't make my mind up. So the big question, what be considered a good choice of riffle to buy for both target out to 1000yds and a good hunting rifle???? Don't want a heavy rifle to cope with recoil, so can be carried all day but good enough to do the job on the range too. Any suggestions would be good, forgot to mention budget is fairly tight too. Many thanks for any ideas.

Drivinfish
Isn't the varmint a shorter barrel?

You need two rifles to meet that criteria but is sounds like you dont have the budget for two rifles (Good ones anyway) , buy the one you`ll use the most first and save for the second one. Tikka + Tikka.

duey
A tactical type or heavy varmint factory rifle is the nearest you will get to cover both disciplines from one rifle but there will always be compromises as the requirements are too far apart really. probably best to lean the choices towards the discipline you will use the rifle for more and what you feel is what you can cope with best for that discipline Buy a stalking type and keep a look out for a used older style target rifle, like a swing, that can be still very good shooters and reasonably priced Happy hunting
ejg223
Get a T3x CTR, with factory ammo you can practice out to good 800m. I used mine to 900m and got good hits. Medium weight barrel is Ok for stalking as well. Shoots fantastic with Hornady 168 factory match, at least the two I had/have do. edi
VarmLR
I use a 24 inch heavy barrelled Tikka T3 in GRS stock for 1000 yard target and hunting. It does do both very well. Now, had the question been "1000 yard competative BR target" than it would be true that you'd be better off looking elsewhere, but a 24 inch T3 will do very nicely at 1000 yards, using 175 to 190 grain bullets and is able to deliver moa at 1000 yards for informal long range shooting. I also know of plenty of fellow shooters who use similar set ups for both disciplines.
