.17 Hornet scope

Can you guys give me your thoughts on a suitable scope for my new .17 hornet CZ Varmint ?

I was thinking somewhere along the lines of a Sightron S111 6-24 x 50, Weaver 6-24, Leupold etc.

I don't want to put a budget scope on it, I realise the importance of good optics.

Iv'e never learned to dial in for different ranges but might give it a go with this one, although I guess the little pill will be running out of legs past 250 yards or so.

I've heard they shoot pretty flat out to that range so I might be wasting my time.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Aussie, the 17 Hornet is a good little cartridge touted by Hornady as having 'a trajectory like 55g 223",specifically with their ammo 24" barrrel:

here are drops in inches:

20g VMax @ 3650 !00y 1.1 200y 0 300y 6.4 400y 20.6

The wind drift however will be a bit more than 55/223,and energy considerably less. Here's Hornady's 223 load:drpp/drift 10 mph wind

223 Hornady 55 Vmax @ 3240 100y 1.4/1.1 200y0/4,6 300y 7/10.9 400y 21.4/20.8

You shoud of course check your actual rifle drops/drifts as they may not acieve the Hornady claims.

The cartridge does look to have 300y potential on small varmints out to about 300y.

You'd be best learning your up clicks for much over 200y,and need a laser rangefinder.

SO....a decent scope is indicated....my experience is that at least 24x is useful-it's all about precision aiming (with the right clicks of course) and 20+ mag helps that. Sightron S111 have a very sound reputation, though you'd need to be shooting a fair bit beyond 250 to fully appreciate what it offers;but a decent scope is seldom regretted.Leupold are fine too around 8-25 wih the varmint reticule eg.

Good shooting.

since its a 17 hornet and going to be used for hunting i think a leupold would be a good buy.there not great with some night vision but are good in low light.you can get one with 25 mag target turrets and lifetime warranty for 4-800.whilst there are good target scopes like sightron in the mix i wager leupold will win in low light.

I love my Leupold VXIII with the varmint hunter reticule for this kind of application, I never got into dialling with a walk & stalk hunting rifle, rather than a static varminting situation. The varmint hunter reticule works great, as long as you understand it properly.

The scope is light, great light transmission and clarity, the reticule is fine and not illuminated but I find it works fine under a lamp.

They are silly money though, recent Hawkes are good, I love the Leupold, but I only have 1, I have 4 Hawkes!
